Cathedral of San Nicolo, Noto
A perfect example of the Baroque style of architecture. It is soars above us, making a statement. The Baroque style has its birth in the counter reformation of the Catholic Church when art and architecture was used to elicit an emotional and sensory appeal to the huddled masses being tempted by the protestant reformation. It is best known for creating a sense of movement or “dynamism” and overwhelming the senses with gilded statues, columns, domes, curves, blind arches, relief sculpture, infinite surface treatments, and spires reaching ever higher. We are puny creatures before the magnificent church.
