Part 1
âWill you eat?â I huff after Soldat sits down and ignores the hot food, âItâll go cold and honestly itâs not that bad,â Beef borscht, a mash of carrots, corn and potato, biscuits with cold gravy and something that looks like birdâs milk cake. Itâs good food. Weâre fed better than anyone else in this facility. However, he seems more interested in inspecting his metal arm and I sigh.
I swear heâs hardly a soldier. I need to baby him half the time. Combing his hair, washing his arm, feeding him. So, I sit on the bed next to him and scoop up a spoonful of the borscht. He turns back towards me and enthusiastically allows me to spoon feed him through dinner. âThe things I do for youâŠâ I mumble and steal a bite of the cake. I was right. Birdâs milk. He seems strangely thoughtful as he eats.
Itâs finally time to relax. I return the tray and dishes to the kitchen and when I come back, heâs reading a Korean childrenâs book aloud. I notice itâs in Hangul.
âThatâs good, moya Soldat,â I know reading a new alphabet is difficult. He lays on his stomach on the bed and I help him through understanding the words.
I set about massaging his shoulders and back again. I can finally tell when his knots are gone because the strain leaves his voice and he seems sleepy. I put the book back on the shelf and glance at the clock. 23:07. He stretches out his muscles while I take clothes to the laundry and fix our beds. We stand in the small bathroom down the hall, brushing our teeth. I sit on the counter and Soldat makes faces with a mouthful of toothpaste for my amusement.
On our way back from brushing our teeth, I receive our packed bags for tomorrow morning. When we come back and put them down, he picks up his mask and studies it for a moment. He seems sad and distant. I know he hates the mask. Itâs like a muzzle. I hate it possibly more than he does because I understand the implications behind the mask whereas he just sees it as a piece of restricting uniform. I place my hand on his back and rub gentle circles with my thumb. He drops it back into the bag and crawls into bed. Itâs about to hit 00:00 so I kneel next to him, remind him to relax, and stroke his hair until he closes his eyes.
I leave and begin prep for the next morning. This, as usual, involves handing a receipt to a treasury official and receiving an envelope of money, which is US dollars this time, placing orders for rations for the designated travel time (4 days), receiving briefings for the mission and checking over our bags.
I finally get back to the room at about 2 in the morning, luckily we wonât be woken until 10 am. I can hear Soldat muttering in his sleep and immediately know heâs having a nightmare. I change into a nightgown and sit down next to him, stroking his hair until he seems to calm down.
I wake up with a jolt as the alarm goes off. I reach over and turn it off before realising Iâm in his bed. Still on top of the covers. Not unusual. I seem to always end up falling asleep after comforting him from a nightmare. He sits up and stretches. I hear knocking and get up to find that breakfast has arrived. I thank the kitchen girl and take the cart.
I dress in the basic white travel sweats for the day before taking my tray and settling on the floor. Soldat joins me in a matching outfit, but his is grey. His meal is very protein-heavy, butterbrot with ham, eggs, tvorog (like cottage cheese), kasha (a grain porridge), orange juice and coffee. Calorie dense and carb and protein based. Mine isnât too different but I ended up with kasha, butterbrot with butter, one egg and coffee. He seems happy and digs in while talking animatedly about seeing things in Washington while I read through the logistics of the mission, where weâre based, whoâs accompanying us, who the target is, when and where the mission is supposed to be carried out. I like traveling a lot and I know he enjoys it too.
I know we have to be at the hangar at 12:35 and wheels up at 12:45. So with nothing to do but relax, we talk for a while, joking and pretending that weâre not going on this trip to murder someone.
When I decide itâs time to go, we grab our bags and head up past the training center and arrive at the hangar early. We meet with the officials and are given orders to wait in the jet. Itâs a big cargo-style jet with a large open space in the center and benches around the perimeter.
Throwing our bags down, he picks a spot towards the back and I join him. He lays down with his head in my lap and I pretend to be inspecting his face, putting more disinfectant on his already healed wounds from yesterday and checking his pupil dilation. Eventually he closes his eyes and tries to sleep. We have 10 and a half hours to wait until we arrive in DC.
The other guards file in, including Soldatâs handler, a huge Serbian guy who goes by Petrovic. They look confused at the sight of the Winter Soldier sleeping on his nurseâs lap but Petrovic and the two officials ignore it. Theyâre used to it by now.
The flight goes slowly with not much to do. Thereâs quiet chatter, soldiers sleeping on benches and the ground, a few are reading. I wake my soldier up at around 2:50 to eat something since foodâs being handed out. We sit on the floor and eat. Beef with potatoes, hot shchi (a cabbage soup), black bread and coffee. Chocolate bars are offered around by one of the younger guards however that offer never gets to Soldat. I take one and thank him before breaking it in half to give to Soldat.
Thereâs some quiet socialising among the guards since the officials and pilots seem chatty and happy up front. Some of the men try to include me in the conversation but Iâm fairly disinterested and direct the conversation to someone else before I have to talk for very long. After the foodâs been finished it seems as though we go back to silence. I offer a game of 101 to Soldat with a pack of cards and we play quietly for an hour or so. More snacks and cups of kvass are once again passed around and after we finish, Soldat and I fall back asleep for a few hours.
Petrovic wakes us up when dinner is being served, around 7pm. The TV is turned on for the Washington DC news and everyone gathers on the floor again to eat. For dinner weâre given pork stewed in tomato sauce, a salad of pickled cabbage, cucumbers and carrots, more black bread, buckwheat porridge and a double shot of vodka is offered to everyone. I take mine but quickly pass it to Soldat since vodkaâs strange attractiveness doesnât make sense to me. For dessert weâre all given strange little tea cakes, apparently British, and kissel, a fruity jelly-like dessert.
Most of the guards get some sleep but a few figure since weâll be landing in a few hours they may as well stay up. Soldat goes right back to sleep, this time leaning back on my chest with his head on my shoulder, but I keep a wary eye on a few of the younger guards who may not fully hold their alcohol too well. Kvass is offered around again at about 10 and I take the cup and read a book I bought on our last mission in Ukraine.
We finally land somewhere around 11:30 and I wake Soldat up. We pick up our bags and are directed to a truck with Petrovic.
Once we arrive at the base, Petrovic gets our keys and tells us to stay in the room. He disappears into the room next to us and I have to literally undress Soldat to get him into the shower. We both scrub down before climbing into the creaky double bed and knocking out completely.  When Petrovic comes in the next morning to brief us on the timeframe he admits that we could be here for up to two weeks. Soldat starts getting ready to leave. Since Iâll be on standby the first day, I end up alone in the base, writing up a medical report in case something happens.
The next night I am assigned my suit for a mission. Iâm nothing but aid at this point but itâs best to be prepared if it comes to a fight. Soldat is given a sniping gun and our main goal is to just shoot and get out.  We end up on the roof across from an apartment building, aiming through a window. I sit impatiently. Whoever lives there crawls in through the window and we wait for the light to be turned on. A few minutes and the target stands up. Soldat gets a few good shots before heâs down. We watch as he gets dragged out of sight.
âBegat!â Run. We both spring up and sprint across the roof. We jump over a few alleyways before I see the end of our block, where a nondescript car is waiting for us. We land on an adjacent one before the man in pursuit of us smashes through a window and onto the same roof as us. I hear his shield coming towards us but Soldat turns and catches it easily. He throws it back at the man and we jump off the building, sprinting back to the car parked down the street. We drive off back to the base.
The moment we arrive and jump out of the car, Soldat starts pacing with nervous energy. I walk over to him. I can hear him getting worked up.
âI wouldnât do that, Ms Kang,â His handler puts his hand out but I ignore it. I hear guns being cocked but I know theyâre trained on Soldat, not me. I step in front of him and he stops abruptly.
âStop it,â I place my hand on his chest and stare straight into his eyes, challenging him, âYouâre acting like a child,â He stares back at me. As frustrated as he may be, he knows that Iâll knock him out if he doesnât stop freaking out. He takes a big, huffy breath and kneels so that I can wipe the charcoal from around his eyes. The other soldiers relax their weapons and I can hear as they slowly resume their positions.
âMianhae,â It doesnât matter that he says it in Korean, itâs so quiet no one else couldâve possibly heard it.
âItâs ok. I know youâre stressed. Youâre fine,â I tell him, patting his cheek as I finish up.

 Chapter: 8/?
 Part 7
When I wake up, Iâm on the ground somewhere. I sit up way too quickly and I almost pass out again immediately. Some kind of warehouse or⊠something. I remember falling and hitting the water and then⊠nothing. Behind me someone moves and I spin around, only to find Bucky waking up. His arm is caught in a sort of vice.
I move forwards and wrap my hands around his face, muttering apologies in Russian. His free hand traps mine there. I press my lips softly to his forehead. He starts trying to get up and I hear Samâs voice for a moment and then footsteps. I turn around and see Rogers and Wilson approaching us cautiously.Â
  âSteve,â
âWhich Bucky am I talking to?â Heâs clearly uneasy.
âYour momâs name was Sarah,â He pauses before chuckling, âYou used to wear newspapers in your shoes,â
âCanât read that in a museum,â Steve smirks a bit.
âJust like that, weâre supposed to be cool?â
âI dropped him,â The two men look to me, âUsed the fail-safe. Itâs not even written down in his files. Say a word, he drops unconscious and switches out of it,â They nod but still seem unsure.
âWhat did I do?â Bucky manages to get out.
  âEnough,â
âOh god. I knew this would happen,â His voice breaks a little and so does my heart, âEverything HYDRA put inside me is still there. All he had to do is say the goddamn words,â
  âWho was he?â
  âI donât know,â
âThe bombing, the setup⊠The doctor did all that just to get 10 minutes with you. I need you to do better than âI donât knowââ
âHey! Ok. Thatâs enough. Give him a fucking break!â I stand up.
  âN/N, donât,â
âHeâs been through hell and back. He wakes up and youâre already interrogating him. Maybe back off a little!â My voice has been rising in volume and I find myself standing directly in front of Steve, âIâm not scared of you. And unlike my soldier, I donât have any issues with hurting you to deal with you!â
âY/N, stop,â I whirl around, âHeâs just trying to help us,â I huff, debating whether it was worth punching his face but decide against it and march back to Buckyâs side and crouch beside him, âHe wanted to know about Siberia. Where I was kept. He wanted to know exactly where,â
âWell, fuck,â I mutter quietly. Only one reason anyone would want to go there.
âWhy would he need to know that?â
âBecause Iâm not the only Winter Soldier,â
Watching Soldat train was certainly not my favorite activity. It was stressful and I disliked the other supersoldiers. One in particular was very aggressive.
Today was no exception. The rest of the nurses and I stood by on benches next to our soldiers. I stood with Konstantinov, Soldatâs current handler. Watching a pair of them compete in hand-to-hand, I bounced slightly on my toes. Soldat gave me a look but I ignored him.
I was getting nervous as Soldat started to spar with the angry one. I held my breath as they fought. The other one managed to get a grip on his arm and then kicked him across the room. He landed next to me after hitting the wall.
âYouâll have to do better,â Konstantinov scoffed, âGood work,â He directed towards the other one.
I bent down and pressed my palm to his cheek before he stood up. While the other oneâs nurse took his heart rate, he slammed the poor guy onto the ground after breaking his arm.
One of the guards hit him with a stick but it hardly did anything. Konstantinov cocked his gun, âSoldat, get me out of here,â I followed them out of the room while the other soldiers turned on the guards and the nurses. We ended up in a safe part of the facility while the others were sedated.
  âWho were they?â
âTheir most elite death squad. More kills than anyone in HYDRA history,âÂ
âAnd that was before the serum,â I add, shaking my head.
âThey all turn out like you?â Sam seemed edgy now,
  âWorse,âÂ
âThe doctor,â Steve asked, âCould he control them?â
  âEnough,â
âSaid he wanted to see an empire fall,âÂ
âWith these guys he could do it,â I stand up, âThey speak 30 languages, can hide in plain sight, infiltrate, assassinate, destabilise. They can take a whole country down in one night, youâd never see them coming. We were taught the same things too, the enhanced,â
âThis would have been a lot easier a week ago,â Sam says to Steve.
They release his arm from the vice, still talking.
  âIf we call Tony-â
  âNo, he wonât believe us,â
âEven if he did, who knows if the Accords will let him help?â I turn my focus back to Bucky, whoâs trying to calm down again. I run my fingers through his hair and remind him to breathe.
We end up in a really old car, squished in. We were flown to Germany for whatever reason. Iâve relaxed my head against Buckyâs shoulder and when we stop I see that blue-haired girl, Selene, step out of a different car to meet Steve.
After a few minutes of chatting and what-not, they kiss and I smile a bit. Steve seems nice, I can understand why sheâs into him. Yeah, heâs pretty but heâs not my Soldat.
He tosses his shield and something else in the back before we drive to the airport.
We park and get out. Iâm on high alert, definitely not liking the parking lot. We meet a man and a young woman climbing out of a white van. They greet Steve while Buck and I lean on the car.
I run my hands over his face softly, knowing a fight is coming. He leans his head into it and my heart skips a beat. I touch his cheekbones, the tip of his nose, his lips. I sigh a little before dropping my hands to my side.
I focus on another guy whoâs stepped out. He seems⊠Weird. I shrug it off and the girl waves at me. I wave back but jump a little when Bucky says loudly,
  âWe should get moving,âÂ
âWeâve got a chopper lined up,â The first guy tells us. Over the intercom, a voice tells passengers to evacuate in German.
âTheyâre evacuating the airport,â I say thoughtfully. Thatâs not good.
  âStark,â Sam sighs.
âSuit up,â Steve instructs everyone. Bucky and I donât exactly have much so he pulls on the leather jacket from our bag that Selene retrieved and I yank on the harness and my fireproof long sleeve and make do with my baggy jeans. I grip his hands while he mentally prepares himself to fight.Â
Steve runs out alone to the helicopter but is quickly intercepted by Iron Man. Cool. This will go down well. I keep count as more arrive. Another âIron Manâ who arrived with Stark. The same one who stopped us in Romania. The man in the cat suit who I now know as King TâChalla. Natasha and another girl with pink hair. Some strange younger boy in a suit. He takes Steveâs shield with some sticky web stuff. Iâm not a fan of that.
I move to sit with Wilson and Bucky while they scout for their Quinjet. Sam finds it quickly enough and lets Rogers know.
Immediately Lang and Barton initiate combat and the three of us start sprinting towards the jet. The kid hits the window as weâre running.
âWhat the hell is that?â I laugh at Buckyâs face, a mixture of confusion and horror.Â
âEveryoneâs got a gimmick now,â Sam rolls his eyes and runs faster. I know heâs struggling to keep up with our pace. I find it difficult already to slow down enough for Bucky, let alone a normal person.
The kid busts through the window and kicks Sam. Hard. I skid to a stop and Bucky turns around to punch him but the spider-kid catches it.
âYou have a metal arm? That is awesome, dude!â Ok, thatâs disturbing. How did he not go flying? I can see Bucky trying to work that out as well before Sam grabs the kid and continues to fly through the airport.
Iâm still standing there when Bucky practically throws me over his shoulder and starts running again.Â
âPut me down, suka!â I hit his back but he still keeps a grip on me. He does drop me a few seconds later though and flings a huge chunk of⊠something at the kid. He pulls me behind a pillar. He looks back to check if he hit.
âHey buddy, I think you lost this!â The hunk of metal comes flying back at us and Bucky throws himself on top of me. I shove him off, ready to set the kid on fire when Sam starts fighting him again.
Bucky grabs my harness and starts dragging me. I see Wilson hit the floor and then get stuck to a railing. Bucky seems to forget heâs got me in tow when he flings himself in front of Sam to protect him from the kid kicking him. We all hit the ground and Iâm momentarily unaware of what happens. I see Buckyâs metal arm trapped to the ground with more of that nasty web stuff but Iâm too dizzy for it to make much sense.Â
âYou couldnât have done that earlier?â
âI hate you,â Wilson groans. I sit up but Iâm overcome by a wave of nausea. Fuck. Iâm definitely concussed. I know I can push through the effects of it but for the moment I just sit there, trying to hang on to whatever remains in my stomach.
âSunny? Sunshine? Y/N!â I jolt and realise Buckyâs been yelling at me. I wave my hand before jumping up and throwing up somewhere behind a wall.
âIâm good. Letâs get out of here,â I groan. Now that thatâs done, Iâll be fine. Buckyâs not having any of it though. He holds his hand out and I begrudgingly allow him to hoist me onto his back, âYouâre slow enough without me,â I grumble.
âI lift 400 pounds. Youâre nothing,â We start running again and make it outside, meeting Steve and the others. We stop abruptly when some floating figure cuts a line in front of us. Great! Another issue.Â
âCaptain Rogers. I know you believe what youâre doing is right but for the collective good, you must surrender now,â I slide off of Buckyâs back.
âWhat do we do, Cap?â Wilson mutters.
âWe fight,â We all move forward to meet them, jogging, then breaking into a run.
I lock eyes with the pink-haired girl. I meet her and get a good grip on her, trying to wrap my arms around her neck. Iâm aware of Bucky on my right, locked in battle with TâChalla. Sheâs really good at hand-to-hand combat though, and definitely stronger than me. My agility makes me a good match though, and we lose and gain position often. Her fight pattern is uncomfortably familiar and I canât help but wonder why I recognize it. She jerks away quickly when I grab her hands, which have gripped my harness. I feel their heat and I know I canât control it for much longer. I use that to backsault out of it and run towards Bucky.
He gets thrown into the side of a box and is clearly winded. TâChalla moves to strike him and I put all my energy into sprinting into him. I slam into his whole body and send him flying. Wanda, the girl who waved at me in the car park, catches him with her weird magic stuff and throws him through a plane tunnel. I salute her before yanking Bucky to his feet.
Heâs a little bit out of it so I use all my strength to pull him along, as fast as I can go. Steve meets us and we stop for a moment.
âWe gotta go. That guyâs probably in Siberia by now,â Heâs panting. Hard.
âWe gotta draw out the flyers,â Steve responds.
âIâll take Vision, you get to the jet,â
âNo, you get to the jet. The three of you,â Sam calls in over the comms. Clint agrees.
  âAlright, Sam, whatâs the play?âÂ
âWe need a diversion. Something big,â I consider sending myself to a plane or one of the buildings to blow it up.
âDonât,â Buck grips my wrist so hard I think for a moment he might break it,  âYouâre not playing kamikaze again,â I nod, but still consider it.
âI got something kinda big, but I canât hold it very long,â Lang says over the comms, âOn my signal, run like hell. And if I tear myself in half, donât come back for me,â
âHeâs gonna tear himself in half?â Bucky shakes his head. We all wait for a moment.
Lang transforms until heâs huge. Like. Bigger than the planes, âYou go ahead. We can catch up,â Buck breathes in my ear. I almost shake my head but the look he gives me scares me a little. And thatâs saying something. I nod but quickly press my lips to his.Â
  âRun fast,â I whisper.
âI guess thatâs the signal,â Rogers is still staring at Scott.
I take off running, knowing no one will catch me. I donât look back, no matter how much I want to. I hear burning behind me and realise Iâm running on flaming feet. That might be cool and all, if it was because of how fast I was running. But the truth is simply that Iâm upset and worried about my Soldat.
I reach the jet and skid to a stop. I try to put out the flames but Iâm getting myself more and more worked up the more I try to extinguish them.Â
âFuck, fuck, fuck!â I stamp my feet. My hands are also burning.
I hear a crashing and see a building coming down over the entrance to the hangar. I rush to reach Steve and Bucky, who are just about to reach me when it stops. Wanda is holding it, barely. Something happens and she has to let it go but Steve and Bucky make it in. I fling myself at my soldier and his arms wrap tightly around me, picking me up and carrying me into the jet. My feet and hands mustâve gone out.
Steve starts it up and we fly out of the hangar. Bucky collapses to the ground, still holding me so hard I can hardly breathe. I donât care though and knot my fingers into his hair.Â
âBreathe, doll. You need to breathe,â He whispers into my ear as I fight down sobs. Iâm not sure why Iâm so upset now. Of all the times to be upset. I must look insane, my eyes are wide, staring straight into his. Itâs the sight of those striking blue eyes that make my heart flutter.
His hand reaches for my face and I allow him to brush back my hair and stroke my cheek. I calm down enough to feel us speed up. We must have Stark and the other guy on our tail. Bucky settles himself in a seat and straps himself in. I sit on his lap and try to calm the anxiety in my chest.
We fly for an hour before I start to relax. I find a first aid kit and deal with Buckyâs cuts. I make a fuss over the tiniest things and he allows me. Normally heâd brush me off and try to make me sit down but he must think itâs better to allow himself to be fussed over again. I finally finish and my hands are still shaking.
Why Iâm on edge, Iâm not sure.
Bucky
âKang Y/N,â She freezes, startled at the use of her full name. She locks eyes with Bucky, âYou are going to be fine,â He knows that itâs because theyâre returning to Siberia. To where both of them were held against our will. She shakes her head and sits down across from him, âWhatâs going to happen to your friends?â
âWhatever it isâŠâ Steveâs voice breaks a little, âIâll deal with it,â
âI donât know if Iâm worth all this, Steve,â He sighs. She exhales and buries her face in her hands.
âWhat you did all those years. It wasnât you,â Steve is quiet when he says it but thereâs a weight behind his words, âYou didnât have a choice,â
âI know. But I did it,â She stands up.
âShut up,â Bucky opens his mouth but snaps it shut when he sees her face. Itâs dark, her eyes are filling with tears, âDonât even fucking⊠Just. Donât,â Sheâs been on edge since the airport and this conversation isnât helping. She walks to sit on the floor of the jet, towards the back.
He moves to sit next to Steve.
âShe really cares about you,â His voice is hushed.
  âI guess,âÂ
âDonât give me that,â He rubs his eyes, âShe wouldnât be here right now if she didnât. I see the way she looks at you. Itâs⊠A lot. The way she hovers over you, fusses about your injuries, always ends up back at your side. Iâve never seen anyone like that before,â Bucky considers his words for a moment.
After HYDRA and SHIELD. After the crash. She was there, obviously looking for him. She came with him, knowing sheâd be killed if they were caught. The way she fought to stay by his side after they were taken from Romania.
According to Steve, sheâd jumped right off the roof for him. Sheâs always been like that though. Itâs always been⊠Y/N and Bucky. Heâd never really considered it until now.Â
  âDo you think sheâŠâ
âIâm not blind, Buck. She kissed you. Thatâs not just a friend thing,â He smirks at Bucky. He looks back over at her. Sheâs clearly still nursing a headache and God knows what other effects of a concussion. Her head rests in her hands as she sits on the floor.
He knows he felt his heart skip a beat when she kissed him. It always does when she touches him. Heâd always just put it down to the fact that every other instance of physical contact in his life had been violent.
But maybe it was something elseâŠ

Part 5
Two years pass by quickly. I start calling him Bucky as he remembers more and more. He opens up to me about the memories he regains and tells me stories about his past. We both get much better at cooking and weâre both much more comfortable leaving the house. Thereâs a market on weekends two blocks from our apartment. I get a job at a nursing home and it pays the bills, not much more. Bucky starts doing odd jobs for extra income to afford the food. Money ran out quickly from the cash we had when we escaped. Iâm still anxious about being discovered and taken back to HYDRA but they seem to be non-existent. We read the newspapers and keep up to date on American news too. Our life is comfortably routine and relaxing. I enjoy my job and Bucky seems to have become more⊠Human. More like the average person.Â
Itâs a Saturday morning when our life crumbles. Weâre both at the market on my day off, picking out fruit and chatting with the vendors who weâve come to know as friends. Iâm looking for some of the Hungarian dumplings I tried a few months ago and fell in love with when I turn around and notice Bucky is staring at a newspaper from a kiosk and shaking. I excuse myself and head over.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â I lean past him to read it.
âIâm wanted. For something I didnât do,â He mutters. We both head back to the house.
We get there and cautiously walk through the front door. A man stands in our apartment. Captain America himself. Heâs not facing us and takes Buckyâs notebook off the top of the fridge and flips through it. I tense and Bucky grips my hands, which are beginning to heat up quickly. Rogers looks up and turns around. I step in front of Bucky and stare dead into Rogersâ eyes.
âDo you know me?â Bucky considers for a moment.
âYouâre Steve. I read about you in a museum.â I can hear a voice through Rogersâ comms. He sets the book down.
âI know youâre nervous. And you have plenty of reason to be,â He steps back, âBut youâre lying,â
âI wasnât in Vienna. I donât do that anymore,â Rogers glances out the window.
âWell, the people who think you did are coming here now,â He steps forward,  âAnd theyâre not planning on taking you alive,â I sense motion in the stairwell and Bucky drops my hand quickly. I realise Iâd burnt him. I can feel my hands sparking and my sense going into overdrive in fear.
âThatâs smart. Good strategy,â He says quietly. More sounds above us.
âTheyâre on the roof, Iâm compromised.â This time I hear the voice in Rogersâ comms.
âThis doesnât have to end in a fight, Buck,â Bucky sighs.
âIt always ends in a fight.â He pulls off his glove, revealing the metal hand.
  âFive seconds.â
âYou pulled me from the river,â Rogers says loudly, âWhy?â
  âI donât know,âÂ
  âYes, you do.â
âBREACH, BREACH!â We all look at the window as a grenade is thrown through. The first one is smacked away by Rogersâ shield but other lands by Buckyâs feet. He kicks it away and Rogers covers it with his shield and it absorbs the explosion.
âSchieĂ die TĂŒr auf!â The door begins to jolt violently.
Bucky picks up the mattress to protect us from another grenade and then flings the table at the door, effectively blocking it. Soldiers swing through the windows and I back up quickly while Rogers and Bucky fight them off.
I desperately want to help but I know I canât trust myself to have control. Last time I ever fully used my powers in combat I killed three of the soldiers who were helping me.
Someone busts through our balcony door. Rogers blocks his gun but Bucky kicks the guy out as hard as he can.
âBuck, stop!â Rogers yells, âYouâre gonna kill someone,â Bucky flips him over onto the ground and punches open the floor next to his head, pulling out our backpack.
âIâm not going to kill anyone.â He throws the bag off the balcony and it lands on the adjacent roof. Bullets cut through the window and Bucky pulls me behind him, blocking them with his arm but Rogers uses his shield to cover us. He walks forward, blocking bullets with his hand before punching the guy and throwing a cinder block at him.
Someone shoots through the hinges on our door and Bucky punches them before kicking the door out, pulling me behind him. He fights several soldiers off but the best I can do is cover his back by blocking punches. I know my hands are sparking like crazy and my senses are begging to release the pressure.Â
âJump!â He yells and I swing over the edge and drop to the next floor before Bucky grabs the guy whoâs on a cable from the roof and uses him to knock out another soldier. I dodge the attacks and try to resist the aching in my hands and feet.
Buckyâs got his hands full, someone has his arm pinned behind him while he fights off another soldier in front of him. He ends up flipping the guy behind him over his shoulder and almost down the stairwell before Rogers catches him.
âCome on, man,â He shakes his head before throwing the guy back onto the stairs, knocking his unconscious. Bucky rips the railing out and uses it to swing down and kick a soldier through a doorway. I sprint down to the next level to join him. Rogersâ shield knocks out a soldier preparing to shoot at Bucky.
I start to get more upset and struggle to control myself. My job is to protect my soldier from harm. I hear my hair catch and my boots are leaving burn marks on the floor. I know theyâre flaming like my hair and Iâm preparing to send a wave of fire towards the next soldier but before I can decide who to fight Iâm yanked off my feet and have the sensation of falling.
We come to a stop with a jolt and Bucky cries out in pain. Weâve jumped several stories down but he caught us on a railing. I scramble up and over the railing, giving him support with my hand as he climbs over after me. He kicks a door in and I follow him, knowing heâll jump. We sprint down the hallway and leap off the balcony.
It feels like Iâll never stop falling but I hit the ground and roll out of it, silently thanking all the times Iâve been forced to jump out of windows. Bucky scoops up the pack and continues running.
I have more difficulty picking myself up but Iâm not worried about catching up. However he doesnât get very far before someone slams into him from behind, knocking the pack out of his hands and sending him sprawling. Someone in a black suit, complete with ears and claws, stands menacingly over Bucky. Bucky starts to punch him but is quickly surprised by the manâs strength. I start running but Iâm slower than I should be. I watch as heâs kicked into a metal wall and narrowly dodges being skewered through the head by claws.
âSoldat!â I shout as he backs up and starts getting hit by the man again. Unfortunately my shout distracted him and he gets kicked in the face. I mentally slap myself and as I pick up speed I can hear my footsteps leaving quick bursts of flame behind me.
As I reach them, I hear Rogers hit the rooftop behind me and a helicopter approaching from my left. I stop and prepare to protect Bucky from whatever follows us. Gunfire hits the manâs suit from the helicopter but it does nothing except distract him. I snap my fingers and the back rotor on the helicopter catches fire right as someone, presumably the voice talking to Rogers knocks it hard. I sprint hard to reach the edge of the rooftop.
While the man in the black suit is distracted, Bucky kicks him and runs after me. Iâve landed on a ledge below and started dropping myself to the next one when Buckyâs feet land next to my hands. He swings down after me and drops all the way to the ground. I drop to one ledge then the ground but the man has started chasing Bucky down the street.
Somehow the helicopter is still in the air and sends bullets after us. Bucky jumps into a traffic tunnel and Rogers hits the ground behind me. The three of us chasing Bucky follow suit. We all easily pass the cars but I pass the man. He throws a punch at me but I dodge and quickly catch up to Bucky. I slow my pace to match his.
âNo. You need to go faster. Get out of here,â I simply shake my head and vault over a car.Â
âWATCH IT! WATCH IT!â I yell as cop cars meet us head-on. We swerve into the other lane of traffic and go around them. I end up sprinting past Bucky though. My flight reaction is in overdrive and Iâm struggling to slow my pace. I look behind me and watch as Bucky takes a motorcycle from oncoming traffic and jumps on.
As he reaches me, I grab the back of his jacket and lock my legs onto the bike. As we enter the next tunnel the man in the black suit jumps to reach Bucky but Bucky grabs him first. It takes no time to knock the bike down and I prepare to hit the ground. Somehow Bucky catches us and kicks the man off. We continue down the tunnel and as we reach the end, he throws a grenade onto the edge of the overpass, it collapses but the man comes flying through the explosion and clips the back wheel of the bike.
Both Bucky and I hit the ground and roll for a decent amount of time before Rogers joins us and grabs the man. Bucky and I stand up only to find ourselves surrounded by cop cars. I stand in front of my soldier. If I have to, Iâll do it.
My feet are flaming, as are my hair and hands. But Bucky interlaces his metal fingers with my flaming ones and the fire dies out. My knees are weak but the adrenaline in my veins hasnât passed yet. A man in a huge robotic suit lands and points several guns at us.
âStand. Down. Now.â I can hear every gun cocking and I know thereâs a lot. All trained on us. âCongratulations, Cap. Youâre a criminal.â I hear shouting and brace myself. I feel Bucky hit the ground beside me and his hand is yanked from mine.
Immediately my hands spark up and I reach out to touch the soldierâs face.
âStop! Youâll only make it worse,â Rogers yells at me and Iâm startled out of it. I extinguish the flames and hold my hands up. I kneel beside my soldier and we lock eyes.Â
âYa tebya lyublyu,â He mouths. I return it and allow myself to be cuffed as well.
