I rarely watch TV, and I got utterly sucked into the Great British Bake-Off when it last aired. No regrets. (Also why is Thomas the Tank Engine the show that keeps repeating on me? My little brother used to love it, now the neighbor's kid has to show me ALL HIS THOMAS THE TANK ENGINES every time I go to visit)
I am so ridiculously excited about the new season of BakeOff coming it is almost shameful. Â Itâs just so fucking charming I cannot even help it.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS ABOUT THOMAS THAT FOLLOWS PEOPLE EVERYWHERE, IT IS INSIDIOUS. Â The good news is itâs one of the shows my kids love that does not make me want to stab myself in the face with a nail file. Â

This one is all @barkprettyâs fault, namely because of this conversation about Geoff Curnow and Slackjaw and all it could imply. I wouldâve just added this ficlet to that particular thread, but I figured this was long enough as it is. So! A page of the as-yet-unwritten Slackjaw/Geoff Curnow story, about favors owed and lines that shouldnât be crossed and complications
--
âI believe Iâll be calling in that favor now.â
Theyâre standing so close he could count Curnowâs eyelashes if he had a mind to. Muscles tight in Curnowâs jaw, his long, lean body so stiff Slackjaw could bounce a coin off him. He doesnât move as Slackjaw inches closer. Merely breathes, short and sharp through his nose, and his throat bobs hard as he swallows.
âOh?â The casual ease in Curnowâs voice would put the best theater girl to shame. If Slackjaw didnât have other things on his mind, he might very well offer the man a round of applause.
âIndeed.â He circles, close enough to feel the faint shudder of Curnowâs breath, not so close they actually touch. âSlackjawâs been thinking on it a while now. What a man like you might do, given the proper...motivation.â
That earns him an honest, actual flinch. In a low, flat voice, Curnow says, âWhat do you want, Slackjaw?â
One of the lamps has sputtered out. The shadows cast by the roomâs remaining lamps are strange, shifting things, and it smells like oilsmoke and whiskey, like the sweat he can see beading Curnowâs hairline. The dark hair at his temples is shot through with early grey, and Slackjaw wonders what it cost him to claw his way up through the ranks as he did, so young and so hungry and with so much to lose.
What it costs him to stay there, when just about everyone above him would rather see him dead or ruined.
Abruptly, this game heâs playing ceases to be the least bit entertaining.
Slackjaw steps back, putting a healthy amount of distance between them. âSeven percent increase on the cost of elixir,â he says brusquely, ignoring the bewildered surprise that blooms in Curnowâs expression. âUp to eight percent at my discretion, depending on the cost of base materials. And I want patrols on Myrtle Street dropped to twice a week instead of three, with the understanding that if one of my boys is stupid enough to get picked up, itâs at your ladsâ discretion whether or not a palmed coin or two will be enough to change their minds.â
Curnowâs staring at him. Slackjaw just shoots him a wolfish grin, and tries not to remember the way heâd flinched just moments earlier. âProblem, Curnow? I should think my terms are precious fair, given the circumstances.â
âYou--you bastard,â Curnow rasps, âIâd thought--â and before Slackjaw can bristle at the slight to his parentage, Curnowâs hands are fisted in his shirt and the manâs mouth is hot on his and the protest dies before it ever hits his tongue.

SHIP GEOFF CURNOW WITH EVERYONE YESSSSSS.
gahhhhhh I LOVE GEOFF CURNOW, HEâS SO FUCKING INTERESTING WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT ALL THE THINGS THE HEART DIALOGUE IMPLIES ABOUT HIM
so, of course, I have to ship him with like half the dudes in the cast, including several heâs never met in canon because I 100% do not give a fuck
(seriously, though, I would give my left hand for a story about Geoff and Slackjaw doing this weird little cops-and-robbers song and dance with each other where they just keep puuuushing each othersâ buttons while the lines between them get blurrier and blurrier and then they sort of accidentally fall in love with each other w h o o p s. I WANT THIS STORY SO MUCH AND NO ONEâS WRITTEN IT YET. IT KILLS ME)
rules: in a text post, list 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. donât take but a few minutes, and donât think too hardâ they donât have to be the ârightâ or âgreatâ works, just the ones that have touched you. tag 10 friends, including me, so iâll see your list. make sure you let your friends know youâve tagged them!
tagged by: @pathopharmacology
1. Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
2. The Stranger, by Albert Camus
3. The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver
4. The Metamorphosis, by Franz KafkaÂ
5. The Moorchild, by Eloise McGraw
6. All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque
7. White Fang, by Jack London
and now Iâm cheating and putting plays/short stories that I read in anthologies, because the great majority of what I read way back when was anthologies:
8. Medea and Iphigenia in Aulis, by Euripedes (plays)
9. Two Friends, by Guy de Maupassant (short story)
10. âMurder Mysteriesâ from Smoke and Mirrors, by Neil Gaiman (short story)
tagging: crap, do I even know ten people who havenât been tagged already? probably not. uhhh @natagunn, @yasmoose, @glyphenthusiast, @soaringsparrows, @countthelions, hglfkdfgfh Iâm running out of people, @zlukaka, @morlipie, and for some reason the system wonât let me tag @barkpretty, so Zeit I sure hope you read to the end of this - oh wait, I can tag you in the actual tags. NEVER MIND.
also if anyone else wants to holler at me about their favorite books. you are ABSOLUTELY WELCOME TO, because I love books and how others literature them
Iâm sorry, friend :( I donât think you should feel guilty about not being hyped yet; we know so little about Ems and Corvo in this game that itâs really difficult to get excited about their characterization. Fingers crossed they reveal some stuff at E3 thatâll help you get your groove on <333
This is my Pipe Dream for the E3 announcement: Emily has a secret Serkonan girlfriend and homophobic nativists are the ones who kick her out of the fancy house, and she flees to Karnaca with girlflan and dad to the girlflan's house (where she meets the parents, ohohoho) where they regroup and do dramatic stuff and return in a blaze of glory and wedding bouquets
OR it comes out that Emily is definitely half-Serkonan and nativists kick her out and Corvo's like "FINE THIS PLACE SUCKS ANYWAY" and bundles them off to Karnaca, where they meet People who help them do dramatic things and yes one of them becomes Emily's girlflan because I want Corvo to have a confused conniption fit, and the girlflanâs a gal who can definitely look after herself and he's like "well I guess I have bonded with my fellow Serkonan over muscleâ
anyway the important thing is Emilyâs girlflan laughs at all of Corvoâs dad jokes and it gives him an Ego

barkpretty replied to your post âbarkpretty replied to your post âdang I bury myself in dev testing...â
Yeah, I'm kind of surprised by how many people are acting that Arkane recast the Outsider for shits and giggles. Though holy shit, thank god they announced the change now so people can get it out of their system - can you imagine if they kept it under wraps until release? MAYHEM.
I for one would laugh my ass off if the Outsider turned out to speak in kazoos.
3. list your fandoms and one character from each that you identify with.
My main fandom at the moment is Star Wars, and I guess the character that I most identify with... well, itâd be easy to say Kylo Ren, but honestly I donât identify with him all THAT much. I mean, I do a bit, but in terms of characters I actually share traits with, Iâd like to think Iâm more like Finn (given to panicking but trying my best and hoping thatâs good enough). Â
12. dog person or cat person?
Cats. Always and forever and one hundred per cent CATS CATS CATS.
15. five most influential books over your lifetime.
Off the top of my head: The Lives of Christopher Chant, American Gods, The City & The City, Age of Wonder, The Tombs of Atuan.Â
@barkpretty I have yet to figure out how to reply to replies on mobile, but I just want to say that in just about every universe where thereâs a Reynolds, he is represented by a Murder by Death song or a Tom Waits one. EVERY. SINGLE. REYNOLDS
