33 Years of Bare Knuckle II (Streets of Rage 2)
A sequel that didn’t simply make everything “bigger,” but chose to make everything deeper.
The combat system clearly draws inspiration from fighting games— dash moves, combo routes, move cancels, and Special Attacks that function not just as flashy finishers, but as tools for controlling pace and positioning.
All of this is seamlessly fused into a beat ’em up framework, at a time when most games in the genre favored simplicity over depth.
Another reason this game is still talked about today is its music. The House and Techno–driven soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro felt far ahead of its time for the 16-bit era, and continues to be remixed, referenced, and celebrated even now.
Thirty-three years later, Bare Knuckle II is still regarded as the peak of the series, and one of the finest examples of what a truly great sequel can be.
