THIS IS SO LEGIT! (Sorry I love that movie but the last couple minutes with the aliens are bullshit. Like the visual storytelling and cinematography were so on point and it made a lot of the plot points unsurprising but still effective and just goddamn it's one of my favorite movies because of its quality but then the last fucking few minutes. It's like the end of children of the corn, utter shit, no one needs to make the monster real. Sorry I'm very tired and very passionate about this.)
The ending feels like the epitome of a boardroom meeting where a bunch of executives said “you know this is good and all but it needs a big explosive finish with action and monsters so people will like it!!!!!!!!”
like you’ve got this movie with a small cast in one location that has a focus on intrigue, interpersonal relationships, dialogue, and small scale tension. The first “ending” (her escape from the shelter) would have been just fine as it was a step up in terms of scale but not hugely so. Hell, if she had gotten out and seen the alien ship and it had cut to black right there I would call it a near-perfect movie. But no, gotta throw something in that’ll appeal to the blockbuster market.
The only saving grace is that it’s at the end of the movie so once she gets out of the shelter you can just turn the movie off and enjoy everything that isn’t the last 10 minutes for the excellent movie that it is
