Almost a year ago my best friend made me a mix CD. There were a few things on there I was familiar with, but most of it was entirely new stuff. This past year my taste in music evolved at a rapid rate, and Ilse was definitely a big influence. That CD didn't leave my car from the time we put it in on the day she gave it to me, right up to the point I had to take it out of the car stereo and put it in my backpack, before I left to board the plane to the UAE.Â
She put this song on there, (track 14 if I remember correctly) and I was hooked. Of course, I couldn't swallow my pride and ask her what band it was but I found out eventually anyway. Thanks, google. Lorelle Meets the Obsolete, along with Ilse and my aunt, encouraged me to look further into the music scene in Mexico... and I was floored. I had been missing out on so many amazing rock and metal bands coming out of Mexico, all because of the fear some of my family and friends tried to instill within me, about the cartels and the danger of going to Mexico. It was there, despite my ignoring most of it, and it certainly didn't stop me from going to Mexico City. I knew the scene was big, I knew it was there, I knew of the art and film scene and how amazing it was, but I never paid it much mind until recently. I regret not being able to take advantage of my new knowledge before I left San Diego, but there will always be time to do it when I get back.Â
Anyway, Lorelle Meets the Obsolete is an incredible shoegaze/krautrock band from Guadalajara, and I highly recommend their latest album, Chambers, which made #3 on my 2014 albums of the year list.Â
So thank you, obsoletelorelle and acidicpiss for opening my mind and helping me learn to love and explore the greatness that is Mexico, and further embrace the side of myself I rejected for so long. I am learning to love my culture, I am learning to love new music, and I owe quite a bit of that to you.Â
