Bar Douro
One of the newer additions to the already pretty foodie area of Borough is Flat Iron Square.Ā Itās got a small food court and a few more permanent places under a series of railway arches.Ā One of these places is Bar Douro, a new Portuguese restaurant.Ā I was recently around London Bridge looking for a bite to eat so headed on down.
We started off with some milho frito or crispy polenta. Ā It came with a red pepper sauce which was quite nice and sweet. Ā The polenta itself was nicely fried, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy in the middle. Ā A really nice start to the meal!
Then it was onto the pataniscas de bacalhau or salt cod fritters. Ā I do like a bit of salt cod and these fritters were good. Ā They werenāt super crispy and were a little doughy but had some nice big chunks of salt cod in them which was good.
We thought weād have a bit of veg as well so went with grilled chicory that came with almonds and an orange vinaigrette. Ā I wasnāt overly impressed with this. Ā The chicory was nice and all and the almonds were a really nice touch but as a dish, it wasnāt the most memorable.
Then it was onto the octopus with sweet potato mash. Ā The octopus was super tasty; well cooked and fresh but Iām not sure it went that well with the sweet potato. Ā It was actually a little too sweet and if you had too much of it with the octopus, it became almost a bit sickly. Ā Eat the 2 separately though and they were both really good so thatās what we ended up doing.
The last savoury dish we had was the Bacalhau a bras. Ā This was basically a salt cod hash.Ā The shards of potato were crispy, the chunks of salt cod big and full of flavour.Ā The portion size was pretty big but it was amazing; so tasty!Ā Definitely something Iād recommend, especially if you like salt cod!Ā Easily the highlight of the meal for me.
For dessert, we had a touchinho do ceu which is a rich egg yolk almond cake.Ā This was dense, almost custard like in the middle; super rich and super delicious.Ā It wasnāt too sweet which was nice and a really nice way to finish up, especially paired with a coffee!
I had a really nice meal here.Ā Thereās still a fair chunk of the menu that I didnāt get to try that Iād be more than willing to go back for but I think Iād still order that salt cod hash every time!
