These are fightin’ words!

We’re not big on violence and are prone to stay away from heavily aggressive video games and films. That’s not to say that we don’t appreciate the audiences for those genres; it’s just not always for us. We tend to lean toward the underdogs, anti-heroes, or unlikely heroes and cheer them on when they stand up for themselves against their enemies. Especially with swords. It’s taken us a few months, but we’ve gathered up a list of our Top 5 favorite sword fights in film (in no particular order, ‘cause that was taking forever to decide).

The Princess Bride -- Inigo Montoya vs Wesley

The Princess Bride holds a special place in every child of the 80s and early 90s hearts. This film has everything in it, and it’s a kissing book. There’s a lot of good action scenes but the best, in our opinion, is this one. We always root for Inigo Montoya because he doesn’t really want to fight the man in black, but he feels a sense of duty and purpose through his sword. He knows no other way of life because of his need to avenge his father. This is our first real look at Inigo and why he is important to the story.

Stardust --Trystan Thorne vs Prince Septimus

We love Stardust, and we know we’ve written about it before, but this final scene where Tristan becomes the hero always gives us chills. Not only is it an exciting scene in the film but it’s also beautifully shot. We love everything about it from Septimus’ dead body movements to Tristan’s cautious dancing movement to finding his inner hero. Tristan is a great underdog hero that really shines in this moment.

Avatar: The Last Airbender -- Sokka vs Master Piandao

There are many great moments and fighting scenes in this series, but one of those that stands out to us above all others is the one between Sokka and the Swordmaster Piandao. Sokka is secretly (not so secretly) our favorite character in the whole series, but this episode was the one that really showcased him as not just the sarcasm and meat-eating guy, but he was a valuable member of Team Avatar The Aang-Gang and in fact a great hero.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace -- Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul

Say what you will about the prequel Star War films, we probably would agree, but there’s something really amazing about this lightsaber battle. Maybe it’s because it foreshadows the fight with Darth Vader in A New Hope or that Darth Maul is a super awesome badass and Obi-Wan seeks to prove himself so very badly under all the pressure he now has on his shoulders. Either way this is a great sword, um, lightsaber battle.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl -- Cursed Jack Sparrow vs Cursed Barbarosa

We love the goofiness of all the Pirates movies! There are some really amazing fight scenes, but none shine as bright as this one from The Curse of the Black Pearl. The way the fight moves from darkness to moonlight, with the characters shifting from undead and back is just really amazing to watch.

Our list for amazing sword fights goes on for another page or two, but we thought it best to end here for now. We may come back with another Top 5, because, after all, the more sword fights the better! Plus, there’s just a ton of movies we haven’t seen yet, and we didn’t even get into martial arts movies!
