Basketry Basics
My undergraduate degree was in studio art, and as an art historian I find that an advantage in understanding how various types of art are made. However, most of the art I've made is two dimensional. I've been meaning to branch out a little to experience an art form I am researching.
Basketry is an important aspect of many First Nations cultures, including here in California. Last Sunday afternoon I had my first hands-on exposure to basket weaving. Cherokee National Treasure Barbara Adair visited the San Diego Cherokee Community to show us how to make baskets. (Neal is a member of the Cherokee Nation.) She is an excellent, patient teacher. I do not see myself becoming a very adept weaver, but I had fun, and the experience definitely added to my knowledge base. I am grateful.
