Oh my God, I didn’t see these earlier. I’m so sorry for this late response. I’m always glad to talk about the novels and yet I didn’t see these. Please don’t think you were bothering me! In fact, I reaalllyyy welcome people coming to me asking/wanting to discuss about Shiki (and everything else really!!). You’re also more than welcome to join in on the discussion in DW even as an anon like I am!!

Yes, the novels are significantly different from the animanga. I’d say that’s due to the animanga being made as shounen demographic and the novels a mature one. In the novels, Seishin is the protagonist and Toshio the deuteragonist, which accounts for their higher amount of screentime and more details about their relationship being explained. I ship them, so it’s all very welcome... lol. They’re most interesting in my opinion.

Ahaha 8DD thank you! Like you, we also think that Seishin is the hardest character to decipher. I think that’s because he himself doesn’t know much about himself yet, what his true desires etc -- and his arc is all about discovering them. He’s contradictory as well as seemingly inconstant, which is in contrast with Toshio who’s more fixed, but I’d say that that’s one of the things that make him so human. He’s the fictional character I think I can see myself in the most, so it also becomes a challenge for me as well as pure curiosity, though I’m in constant danger of projecting myself too much onto him. If you haven’t known already, a lot of my analyses about him come from my own experiences, and as a result they are prob not objective at all. Of course, there are definitely differences, but to me reading his arc is kinda a religious/spiritual experience for me because thanks to it I discovered quite many things about myself. I also sure want to know about your opinion about him as well as Toshio/Seishin!
