What to know concerning the 2025 PFL light-weight, bantamweights and ladies's flyweight finals
A defending PFL champion, a champ from a distinct promotion and a pair of match alternates spotlight Friday’s PFL struggle card, which can crown three 2025 champions in Charlotte, North Carolina (9 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+; prelims at 6:30 on ESPN+). The primary occasion at Bojangles Coliseum pits 2024 light-weight champion Gadzhi Rabadanov towards Alfie Davis. The opposite title fights are at…

So with all of the fights in the modern era, these can be considered “suggestions” to this point BUT if UFC 250 doesn’t undergo any changes, it’s a really great card in terms of bantamweight fights at least. Can’t speak for anything else but the 135 lbers are loaded up:
Aljo vs Sandhagen pit two really long and athletic fighters against one another and if you combine Sterling’s strength with Sandhagen’s freako speed on the ground plus his offensive versatility, you’ve got a hell of a fight. A genuine no BS #1 contender fight and I wouldn’t be bothered by them making this a title fight if need be.
Garbrandt vs Assuncao is interesting because Cody’s BW title run is basically a forgotten memory at this point but he still has a lot of good traits to suggest that if he learns anything resembling patience and defense, he could have another run to the title. Assuncao has been the UFC’s ultimate spoiler (arguably at any weight class) but comes into this one with two straight kinda bad losses where his style looks to be losing its effectiveness. A real nice fight on paper.
I’m not sold on Sean O’Malley (or to the level of other folks) BUT O’Malley vs Eddie Wineland is a pretty solid prospect vs veteran fight. That and I think Eddie Wineland has serious potential to be 2020′s “Get Off My Lawn” old dude, even at a weight class like 135 lbs.
I’m probably less excited for Boom Kelleher vs Cody Stamman than other folks but that’s just because Kelleher is probably going to get wrestlefucked for 15 minutes.

Nobody wins in this bantamweight clusterfuck
2014 began with the injury bug claiming Dominick Cruz in the most injury filled year in all of injuries. It ended the year by returning to the scene of the crime.
Let's get it out of the way before next Thursday.
The announcement that Dominick Cruz had torn his other ACL is a lot of things. It's disheartening, cold, sad, depressing, unfair and every other adjective you'd like to throw onto the moment. It's a guy who deserves a little bit of luck getting slapped in the face by this never ending rainstorm hovering over his career. It was another reminder of how brutal 2014 was in terms of injuries for all of MMA. It was, in few words, fucking awful news RIGHT when momentum was beginning to build toward 2015. It also left those of us who have grown to feel positive about 2015 with that unsettling chill that injuries so late in the year bring. Dominick Cruz is going to celebrate Christmas and New Year's Eve not beginning a camp for a career changing payday but knowing he'll once again have to go through harsh rehab and HOPE to once again climb the mountain for a title shot. THAT fucking sucks. A lot.
2015 is looking bright in plenty of weight classes and organizations. There's stuff to feel positive about, especially since January and February look so loaded for the UFC and MMA as a whole. The thought process was that Dillishaw vs Cruz would fight in March, maybe even as the undercard title fight under an Anthony Pettis title shot. Guess fucking not, huh? Let's not get too down though because there's plenty of good stuff still likely on tap for the year. With that said, let's talk about this rough 135 lb division and the sorry state it's in currently.
This sucks for Dominick Cruz for obvious reasons. This isn't 26 or 27 year old Dominick Cruz trying to rehab from his first ACL tear. It's 29 year old Dominick Cruz on his third ACL injury trying to rehab his way back with a cushy job on Fox doing commentary and with perhaps little reason to try and make another push. The 135 lb division has grown since Cruz was champion and there's A LOT of hungry talent on its way up. If it takes Cruz all year to heal up (which is certainly possible), does it make sense for a slowly exiting his physical prime Dominick Cruz to try and make a run at the title? At this point, it's all fair to wonder. Cruz says he won't retire but that's the opinion of a man who hasn't tried to make another painful rehab induced comeback. Maybe Cruz will then turn it around and have a different opinion in the Spring or so when he's trying to recovery from another drastic injury and his body is giving him hell. Maybe Dominick Cruz will decide to simply sit behind a desk and be an asset to the sport as an analyst.
This sucks for Rafael Assuncao and Renan Barao. It sucks because Assuncao's most obvious title shot opportunity would come from an injury situation. He got it and on the very same day he breaks his ankle. Ariel Helwani says it's an 8-10 week recovery period which coupled on top of an 8-10 week training camp would probably set up a situation where it's probably May or June he'll be capable of taking a fight. That means Assuncao could, in theory, find himself STILL sitting on the sidelines looking for a title shot if Dillishaw defends his title in a big fight. That sucks. That really sucks for a guy who has been treated as a second class citizen at times. This sucks for Renan Barao because if you operate under the belief that he's not "ready" for a rematch with Dillishaw, the issue is entirely out of his hands. He's getting the title shot and he's not going to turn it down because how often do title shots come around? If you're Barao and you've already boofed up one title shot, how many more chances are you going to get? Probably not many. There's plenty of questions about Barao but at this point, he's guaranteed to be the #1 contender. Rarely is a title shot a bad shot but man, this is one of those rare times.
Of course this sucks the most for TJ Dillishaw* as well (outside of Dominick Cruz). The two biggest fights he could have right now are gone. Dominick Cruz was the rival from the enemy camp who beat his mentor and still haid claim to being the #1 bantamweight. Rafael Assunscao might not have had fight fans moist at the idea of a title fight but it WAS a rematch of a close fight he had lost in Brazil that might've gone the other way elsewhere. While Barao is a great fighter, I don't think Renan Barao II will do much for Dillishaw's legacy or his standing as champion. It's fine for him to "stay busy" but I think we've seen enough out of Barao and Dillishaw now to feel confident in the assessment that Dillishaw is going up and Barao may very well be going downward due to the weight cut and/or # of fights he's had. As such, Dillishaw is left to kill time against the likes of Barao or worse, a young fighter who may one day develop into something.
And speaking of young fighters, this sucks for guys like Aljamain Sterling, Thomas Almeida, Pedro Munhoz and Henry Cejudo. These are the future stars of 135 lbs with the proper development and seasoning. Does the bereftness of 135 lbs with two title contenders on the shelf force the UFC to rush some guys? Do guys like Sterling and Cejudo get put on an accelerator track to title shots because nobody wants to see Yves Jabouin fighting for gold? The UFC has to keep a long term approach here and remember that, 135 lb title fights be damned, the best way to move this division ahead is to keep the proverbial kid gloves on the likes of Sterling, Almeida, Munhoz and Cejudo.
So yeah, this entire situation sucks. As we enter 2015, we're left hoping for the best but already we've been slapped across the face with a leather glove. Happy Holidays folks!
