all at once, everything is different / now that i see you
i swear banrisa is the cutest ship ever, and banrisa tangled au??? it's free serotonin~ anyways, i drew my bestest of bros @hqissodelicate's otp bc this ship deserves all the love and appreciation! check out her blog @superultrayumemode for more peak content!! and here's the fic! [ link ]
thinking banrisa thoughts... isa steps out of the shower and texts banri like, "just finished showering!"
over at mankai dorm, banri's feeling cheeky so he texts back, "show me? đ"
2 mins later and banri's suddenly getting flooded with pics of isa's shower: her half-full shampoo with foam clinging to the sides of the bottle, the conditioner, the body wash with water droplets clinging to it, the steam fogging the mirror. he panics to himself like "shit i totally sounded like a fuckboy there, didn't i? now she's mad at me for askin' for pics that's why she's sendin' me pics of those damn soap bottles."
he immediately calls to apologise and is already planning to ask tsumugi for suggestions on apology flowers, when isa says, voice bright as sunshine, "oh, i was just thinking if i should show you the hydrating mask i used earlier! i've already washed it off but i can show you the tub if you'd like-"
and he's like, "... isa-chan. you're not... mad at me for askin' for pics???"
and isa replies, "??? why would i be mad?? i was just showing you evidence that i'd taken a shower."
and banri remembers: this is the girl who accidentally rejected his confession bc she'd GENUINELY believed the "2nd button as a love confession" thing was JUST a fictional trope. and he realises he has to flirt with his girlfriend in a more Clear and Specific Way
the pipeline of isa only holding the bare minimum basic human decency respect for banri bc of the way he was treating juza at the start of act 3 and him barely giving a shit about her beyond a brief flicker of recognition that she's cute, to her respect for him increasing after seeing his Character Development, to them bonding over video games on itaru's cheeto-dust covered couch and something in banri healing when she doesn't get upset when losing to him and in fact wants to continue playing with him (itaru being thirdwheeled in his own room đ§), to them falling in love and banri trying to be all smooth and giving her his second button on grad day except she has no idea that's a Real Thing and not just a shoujo manga trope and accidentally rejecting him by returning his button to him the next day and half the troupe literally kidnapping him and throwing him into the backseat of tasuku's truck and tasuku grudgingly driving him to isa's apartment so he can confess PROPERLY bc if the dorm has to witness YET ANOTHER DAY of them shooting each other longing looks when the other isn't looking, sakyo might just explode something with his mind

the lore i cooked up for isa is so silly. like why did she, after becoming an Official Couple with banri, end up accidentally going to a mixer. and she didn't even know it was a mixer until it ended and one of the guys was trying to ask her out but even before he could pluck up the courage to ask for her number, everyone sees her face light up when she spots banri leaning against a lamppost some distance away and she's like "oh my boyfriend's here to pick me up! he came earlier than expected. thanks for dinner y'all, have a good night! đ" and runs into banri's waiting arms, blissfully unaware of the sound of the breaking hearts and bewildered gasps behind her đ
and similar to the button confession scenario, she KNOWS that mixers are a thing. problem is, she thinks they're just tropes in manga & anime - or, specifically, the romance/dating aspect of mixers is just a trope and Normal Real-Life mixers are purely platonic get-togethers for university students to make friends đ
had a dream of where banri was still an actor but isa was a popstar and he'd star in her music videos as her love interest bc he's her irl boyfriend. woke up and i was like HMMM could this be something đ¤
i've talked about it at length here and finally wrote the "isa meets guy for the first time, is puzzled by the android thing, and thinks he's a chuuni" fic lol. this technically is the prequel to 'guy-san, android or human? or a secret third thing?' but tbh it can be read in any order
also this being the first fic in which isa interacts with the other mankai characters and not just banri?? it's been a long time coming fr
word count: just scrapes 3k words

The first thing Isa sees when stepping through the doors of the Mankai dorms is a blur of purple slamming right into her. It wouldâve knocked her clean off her feet if it werenât for Banriâs hand on her back steadying her.
âIsa-neechan youâre here oh my gosh youâre here!â Kumon babbles at her as he all but crushes her in a tight embrace. âItâs been so long since you last came by! I have so much to tell you! Like the cool street act Nii-chan and I did yesterday, and the cool triangle Sumi-san found, and the cool new ball Iâve been playing withââ
âOi, Brocon, let her breathe,â Banri snaps. Though Isa canât see him, she can practically hear him rolling his eyes in exasperation.
âShut up, stupid One-Length! I donât take orders from you!â But Kumon nonetheless loosens his hold, allowing air to return to her lungs.
She smiles against his shoulder and reaches up to pat his head. âAww, I missed you too, Kyu-chan. Sorry I havenât come by in a whileâfinals were really murdering me.â
The happiness rolls off of her beloved cousin in waves. She activates a small percentage of power and conducts a quick scan. Yep, nothing to be worried about, heâs in the pink of health.
Kumon pulls away and beams at her, looking like the whole sun just decided to take a quick trip from outer space down to the Mankai dorms and grace her with its brightness. âItâs okay, Iâm just really happy youâre here now. Câmon, youâve missed out on a lot while you were gone!âÂ
He lets go of her and grabs her hand, pulling her further into the dorm. She barely has time to toe off her shoes and slip into a pair of guest slippers before stumbling after him, even as Banri calls at Kumon for him to slow down.
It was only a few weeks Isa spent away from the dorm, caught up in the mad rush of assignment submissions followed not long after by her finals, but it honestly felt like months. As she steps into the living room, she takes a deep breath and just lets the familiar noise of the various troupe members doing their own things wash over her. It seems to be a full house today, evidenced by the various voices drifting through the hallways and the familiar buzzing of everyoneâs life forces that seeps from the air around her into her very skin.
Wait. Not everyone. She checks her internal map of everyoneâs life forces and their approximate location in the dorm. Two missing presences. And one unfamiliar one. A visitor? Or a newbie, perhaps? The Spring, Summer, and Autumn Troupes have all recruited a new member each, so itâs not out of the realm of possibility that Winter would have done the same.
âWhere are the Director and Citron-san?â she asks.
At that, Kumonâs footsteps screech to a halt, his face pinching into an uncomfortable wince. Banri sighs and rubs the back of his neck.
âAh, tâthatââ Kumon coughs into his fist awkwardly. âItâs, um, itâs a long storyââ
âThe Directorâs isnât,â Banri says. âShe went out to buy curry ingredients.â
âSo business as usual?â
He sighs, but it sounds more long-suffering than it actually is. âYeah. Omi and Tsuzuru have been busy studyinâ for their finals, so itâs been nonstop curry every day.â
Isa laughs. It must be nice, she thinks wistfully, to have someone cook warm meals for you every day. She lives alone in her apartmentâwell, itâs technically under her motherâs name but her motherâs usually working overseas and comes back to visit every few months. Her dog makes wonderful company, but she unfortunately lacks the opposable thumbs needed to make dinner.
âWhat about Citron-san?â she asks.
Before either Banri or Kumon can answer her, the door to the practice room bursts open, and the Winter Troupe members file out. Tsumugi and Tasuku appear engrossed in a passionate discussionâprobably theatre yap, knowing themâwith a sleeping Hisoka slung over Tasukuâs shoulder like a sack of potatoes. Behind them, Homare prances out, reciting something to Azuma who smiles prettily and nods.
And the last personâIsaâs eyebrows raise. She doesnât recognise this man. Heâs tall, probably around Banriâs height, with a handsome face and dark, slicked-back hair. The newest newbie, perhaps? That would explain the unfamiliar presence she felt, at least.
âOh, Isa-chan, itâs so good to see you again,â Tsumugi greets, breaking off his conversation with Tasuku and coming over. âSince youâre here, I take it that your finals are over?â
âFinally,â she affirms emphatically. âI love what Iâm studying and all, but Iâve really missed coming over to hang out and bullying Itaru-san into exercising.â
Tasuku rolls his eyes as he places Hisoka with surprising gentleness onto the couch. âYouâre gonna have your work cut out with that one. Heâs been slacking off while you were preparing for your finals.â
âDonât be too harsh, Tasuku, he ate a vegetable two days ago,â Tsumugi chides.
âYeah, like two pieces of broccoli, and then he washed them down with a bottle of soda.â
Isa smiles at the familiar banter before her. Ah, how sheâs missed this. And sheâs not too worried about Itaruâsheâll just have to give him her best âIâm not mad, just disappointed and concerned about your longevity as an actorâ look and heâll crack.Â
Just then, the unfamiliar man approaches Isa. His movements are oddly robotic, and his face is void of any particular expression, resembling carved marble.
âBased on my approximations, you are likely Isa Sakisaka,â he says, voice baritone and flat.Â
âYup, thatâs me!â She waves cheerily, masking her confusion. What does he mean by approximations? âAnd you areâŚ?â
âAh, right, you and Guy-san havenât met,â Tsumugi says. âIsa-chan, this is Guy-san. Heâs helping out with the Winter Troupeâs next play.â He turns to Guy. âGuy-san, this is Isa-chan. Sheâsââ
âThe information I have stored in my database describes her as a volunteer who visits occasionally to help out with the physical conditioning of the troupe members, as well as a cousin to Sakisaka, Hyodo, and the younger Hyodo, and Settsuâs girlfriend. Undergraduate student at Veludo Arts University, first year. Approximately 155 centimeters tall.â
Isa blinks. âOh, uh. Thâthatâs. A lot of info you have on me.â
Tsumugi hides a smile behind his hand. âBanri-kun talks a lot about you.â
Banriâs cheekbones turn a light pink. âTch, not just me. In fact, itâs the Brocon whoâs been doing most of the yapping âbout you. Acting like youâd gone off to war or some shit.â
âI donât yap!â Kumon snaps.
Isa ignores her boyfriend and cousinâs bickering as she turns back to this Guy-san. âAnd, um, howâd you figure out my height? Was that something that came up in conversation too?âÂ
And whatâs this about your âdatabaseâ anyway? Itâs giving Chikage-san, not gonna lieâŚ
âIt was an estimate based on an analysis through my visual faculties.â
More slow blinking from Isa. âAnalysis through yourâso, like, seeing? With your eyes?â
Guy pauses, as if mulling over his response. âThe human equivalent of my spherical visual faculties would be called eyes, so I suppose you are not entirely inaccurate.â
âThe⌠huh?â
Azuma touches his lip with the tip of an elegant, perfectly manicured finger. âOh dear. Banri, you didnât explain to your sweetheart?â
âI mean.â Banri shrugs. âFigured itâd be funnier to see her firsthand reaction to Guy-sanâs whole⌠thing.â
âWhat thing?â
âAh, itâs, umâŚâ Kumon flounders as he wrings his hands nervously, eyes darting around the others in the room.
âAllow me to introduce myself.â Guy bows at the waist. If he had a hat on, Isa bets he would have taken it off and held it to his chest like a classic gentleman from some old-timey western movie. âI am Guy. Retainer to Citronia, and an android from Zahra.â
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold up. Hold up.
Isaâs brain feels like itâs melting out through her ears. The words, she can understand them separately. But together? Sheâd sooner comprehend it if you told her that Itaru did a push-up out of his own volition than whatever⌠that was.
âYouâre a what to who and what from Zahra?â
Banri doesnât even bother to conceal his snort. âMan, this is even funnier than Iâd thought.â
Isa whirls on him, incredulous. âIs this a prank? Were you setting me up for this?â She fixes her eyes on the rest of them, who are sporting expressions ranging from sheepish, to uncomfortable, to exasperated. Or fast asleep, in the case of Hisoka. âAre all of you in on this?â
Tsumugi shakes his head, sympathy written all over his face. âI understand this all sounds rather outlandish, but this isnât a prank. Guy-san really is an android and a royal retainer from Zahra. Citron-kunâs retainer, to be exact.â
Citronâah, that must be the Citronia he mentioned. That shouldâve been obvious enough, but sometimes âobviousâ things go over her head, like Banri trying to confess to her with his second button but she didnât realise it because sheâd thought it was just a trope in manga and not, like. A thing.
Anyway.
âCitron-sanâs retainerâŚâ She frowns. âWait, youâre telling me heâs aâ?â
âYeah, Citron-sanâs a prince! A prince from Zahra, and the heir to the throne!â Kumon jumps in to explain. âCrazy, right? All this time, we had royalty living under our roof and we didnât know!â
Yes, that does indeed feel like something they should have known. Imagine, like, Prince Williamâs son casually joining your theatre troupe and putting on plays with you and eating breakfast with you every morning. Thatâs wild. Darn, maybe sheâand this whole company, and in fact the entirety of Veludo Way if the crown prince of Zahra had managed to hide in plain sight for an entire yearâshould keep up with continental news more often.
But with that answer, only more questions spring forth.
She decides to focus on the most normal curiosity first. âThen⌠Guy-san, why arenât you with Citron-san? Not to assume what your job entails, but, uh, normally a retainer would be with his prince, right?â
âYes, that would normally be the case,â he answers, voice still flat as before. âBut unforeseen circumstances have come up. In any case, Iâm banned from entering Zahra. To be precise, I would be arrested on sight.â
She stares at him. âDid you⌠commit a crime?â It might be a harsh assumption to make, but given some of the more⌠interesting characters in this theatre company, itâs a possibility not entirely off the table.
For the first time in their conversation, something akin to an emotion flickers across his face. A slight crease forms between his eyebrows before smoothing out again as quickly, like it wasnât there to begin with. âNo, none that I am aware of. Iâm certain it was Citroniaâs doing, yet I have not fathomed as to why he would do such a thing.â
She winces. âSorry, must be tough.â
Guyâs expression remains blank. âI have no need for your sympathy. I am an android, programmed to do what is required of me.â
âDonât take it to heart,â Tsumugi whispers to her. âGuy-san just talks like that. Because, wellââ
âBecause of the android thing?â
âYes, because of the android thing.â
Isa looks around the room. Everyoneâs faces are sincere, like theyâve all collectively accepted the existence of an android thatâs not just the smartphone brand, but rather one that heavily resembles a human and is the servant to one of their fellow actorsâformer fellow actor?
Then she looks back to Guy, whoâs standing in that uncannily stiff manner with his arms hanging like steel rods by his side. His expression is blank, devoid of any emotion. Kind of how an android would be, she thinks. She wouldnât know; this is her first time meeting one. But⌠still, something feels off about this whole âandroidâ business.
Because if he really was an android, that wouldnât explain the unfamiliar life force she had felt earlier stepping into the dorm. So either thereâs another person here whom she hasnât met yet, orâŚ
She flashes Guy her best winning smile. âWell, this is unorthodox, but itâs a pleasure to meet you, Guy-san.â She sticks out a hand. âMay I shake your hand?â
He glances at her hand. âIf that is your order, then I shall.â
The moment he grasps her hand, Isa lets her power flow through her. Subtly, of course, not wanting to freak the others out with glowing eyes and hair. Sure, theyâsans Guyâknow about her ability, and Banri had witnessed it firsthand before, but still, sheâd prefer not to call attention to it.
The hand holding hers is firm, large, and slightly rough, not dissimilar to Banriâs. She feels veins, bones, and tendons under the skin, much like a normal personâs hand.
Most importantly, she feels life thrumming under the rough skin. Pure, unmistakeable, human life.
Wow, Guy-san is in the peak of health, is the first thought that comes to mind. She canât help itâmaking physical contact with a person automatically gives her a read of their overall health and well-being. If there were any anomalies, like an illness or injury, she would know. But no concerns about Guy. Hale as a horse and brimming with physical strength. If Banri were to randomly throw hands with him, sheâs pretty sure Guy would beat his ass. Not that she wants Banriâs ass to be beaten, but thatâs just how strong Guy is. Which checks out with his occupation (former occupation?) as a princeâs retainer.
Wait.
So her hunch was rightâGuy is a human. She wouldnât be able to discern all this about him otherwise.
But the others seem absolutely convinced that heâs an android.
Or⌠are they?
âSo⌠youâre an android,â she says carefully as she releases Guyâs hand. âWhatâs it like being an android?â
âI cannot offer an explanation as to what it is like to be an android, particularly not in a way that would be understandable by humans,â Guy intones.Â
âRight. UmâŚâ She wracks her brains for something she can ask him to verify her hunch. Not that she doesnât trust her ability, she does, but she canât tell if heâs being for real or if itâs some weird etude practice theyâre all doing. âThen, uh, what do you do as an android?â
âPreviously, I served Citronia and attended to his well-being and safety. Handing him water when I detect that his hydration levels have lowered, eliminating threats to his safety before they can cause him harm, and such. Now, I am assisting the Winter Troupe of the Mankai Company with their upcoming play. I have saved the entire script to my internal memory storage. However, it is posing an inconvenience to the troupe that I am unable to express emotions as much as they can.â
Isa chances a glance at said Winter Troupe members, all of whom are abstaining from commenting. Even Homare doesnât have a remark to make.
Speaking of which, she vaguely recalls hearing about Homare having a hang-up about being a âcyborgâ during the rehearsals for My Masterâs Mesmerised by Mystery, but she knew the comparison of âcyborgâ was more metaphorical than literal.
In Guyâs case, howeverâŚ
Wait. She looks around the room again.
Thatâs right, theyâre all actors. Even Kumon, inexperienced as he is, did a pretty darn good job in his debut play for someone who only had a couple months to learn the ropes from scratch and practise.
So whoâs to say this isnât some silly bit theyâre all in on?
The more she thinks about it, the more it makes sense. Guy doesnât look that old, maybe mid-thirties at most, while Citron is in his early twenties. Chances are, and especially if shoujo manga tropes hold true in real life (and they do, apparently, like boys giving the girl they like their second button as a love confession), Guy likely started serving Citron when he himself was an adolescent at best. And based on how he described himself, it seems as though he didnât have the opportunity in his adolescence to form a holistic sense of identity beyond his role as Citronâs retainer.
But perhaps in his adulthood, and now that heâs been banned from re-entering Zahra, he has a chance to discover who he really is beyond just being a princeâs servant and bodyguard.
Some people, like Kumon, explore self-discovery through pretending theyâre a demon from the third circle of hell. Others, like Itaru, latch so hard onto a fictional character that they sometimes feel like they are the character (Isa has occasionally entertained the idea of Itaru starring as Lancelot in a 2.5D adaptation of KoTR, since they do bear an uncanny physical resemblance).
And it seems like in Guyâs case, heâs straight-up committed to pretending heâs an android. Like, he is completely locked the hell in. From the mannerisms, to the speech, to even his blinking. And the members of Mankai Company are unfailingly kind, especially the Director herself, so it makes sense that they would humour him and his chuuni journey.
Erik Erikson would say mid-thirties is a little late for identity formation, but hey, even if Guyâs psychosocial development hadnât been impeded by having to serve a prince in his adolescence, thereâs no age limit to having whimsy. And Isa knowsâfrom her own experience of having her adolescent psychosocial development disrupted by her own set of Horrorsâhow deeply, intrinsically, indescribably important it is to indulge in oneâs harmless whimsy.
Well, she concludes, as long as heâs having fun, thatâs what matters most.
Wait, she canât actually tell if heâs having fun. But that just goes to show how committed he is to the bit, doesnât it?
She looks around at the men and one boy in the room, at their accepting expressions, and smiles. Seems like theyâre having fun with this android bit too. Theatre junkies will be theatre junkies, she supposes.
Sure, she can play along and see how long this bit lasts. Sheâs not one to ruin other peopleâs fun, after all.
