I entered this in theSBO magazine essay contest. I hope you enjoy it. "Band is a womb of growing, nurturing students who are more than just a bunch of kids. It is a group that is raised side by side from young middle school ages, bound together through school. It brings strangers into one entity with a single heartbeat. It teaches us respect, as we must learn it to accomplish the goals of the program. Band allows you to mold out of the silence of the air, and in football season, the empty and vapid field. It's more than wind through a metal tube, more than an elective. It's a family, a lifestyle crowded with individuals who move as one, who think as one, who act as one, who strive as one. It teaches you things that otherwise you may very well not learn in life as easily-- such as to take pride in excellence, as my band says. Band a living, breathing being that is composed of imagination and it thrives on innovation."
