When the clock in the town square strikes twelve for noon, Yuuri closes up the little shop and dons his cloak and scarf.
“I know, Yurio,” he says, to the bengal cat meowing irritably at him on the counter. “I’ll take care of myself. You can track me if I don’t come back this afternoon, okay?”
Yurio gives a haughty sniff and turns around, lifting his tail to display his butt. Yuuri rolls his eyes, and scribbles out a quick note to Minako about his whereabouts on a scrap of parchment, leaving it under the mortar bowl behind the counter.
The street outside Minako’s little shop is busy with the midday market crowd. Yuuri weaves expertly between the carriages rumbling to and fro on his way down the cobbled path towards the town square, trying not to run for fear of looking overeager. Despite his efforts, however, his heartbeat is pounding in his ears by the time he clears the street and enters the town square with its tall watchtower clock and its musical fountain.
Viktor is sitting by the fountain now, cheerily ignoring the horses drinking nearby as he feeds a couple stray pigeons with crusts of bread. Yuuri takes a deep breath, willing his heart to slow down a little, and smooths down his hair as he strides over to the prince with what he hopes is a casual smile.
“Hey,” he says. Viktor looks up, his eyes brightening like the sun emerging from behind the clouds. Yuuri’s breath involuntarily hitches. His cheeks flare up.
“Hey,” says Viktor, his voice more musical than the fountain. “It’s good to see you again.”
Yuuri’s cheeks burn even hotter at that. “Yes,” he says. “You too.” He pauses, then, looks around the square. “Have you eaten, sir?”
“No need for sir,” says Viktor immediately. “And no, I haven’t.”
Yuuri feels a little stab of relief there, as he replies, “I know a good place for lunch, then, if you’d like?”
