Disclaimer: The following is purely headcanon. Any similarities between this and what is actually canon is actually coincidental.

When Rick was young and both of his parents were still alive, Christmas was a magical time. They would sing Christmas songs while decorating the home. His Dad would watch A Charlie Brown Christmas with him, along with many other Christmas specials. His Mom would help him leave out cookies and a glass of milk for Santa.

After his parents' deaths, Christmas took on a less-than-magical turn. As he was shunted from foster home to foster home, the magic of a family Christmas all but disappeared. There was no one to sing Christmas songs with or watch all those specials with either. 

Rick, however, is not the type to completely give up. He's stubborn like that. Through all the years of crappy Christmases, he promised himself that one day, he'll celebrate the holidays with full force, just like he did with his parents.

Now Rick will do everything he can to live up to that promise he made himself, and he will involve as many people as possible while he does it, because Christmas is best when it's shared with loved ones and those Rick has now adopted as his family.

He will incite Christmas sing-a-longs while decorating everything in sight with fake snow and tinsel. He will insist on making his friends watch all the cheesy specials with him. He will give all the gifts he can afford. He will donate gifts to shelters and donate his time to making sure those less fortunate than him have a good Christmas too.
