yes I’m canadian, and yes, I desperately wanted my role models, the hardworking, talented, inspirational CanNWT to win gold. I wanted Poulin to get her golden hatty and be the cap that broke that 5 gold record and I wanted Lacquette to bring back a medal specifically repping indigenous people. I wanted Agosta to get 4 golds and I wanted Rougeau’s nose to not be a roadblock, but an incredible story of victory through pain. I wanted Fast and Spooner to bring another gold back to Toronto. I wanted all the rookies to feel the feeling of being the best in the world and having that shining circle placed around their necks. but I’m proud of the US as well. Hilary Knight has worked so hard for this. Amanda Kessel came back from her concussion. Megan Duggan worked hard. The Lamoureuxs have worked hard. Maddie Rooney, 20 year old gold medal goaltender has worked so hard. Coyne, Pfalzer, Bellamy, Pelkey, Brandt. They’ve all worked their asses off for this moment and they got it. Yes, I desperately wish that Canada had pulled it off and broken the record and all my favourites had left with huge smiles instead of empty tear ducts. but just having professional girls hockey is an accomplishment. girls hockey is being internationally represented, and it’s okay to celebrate how far women have come. instead of a loss for canada, think of it as a victory for the sport. for womens hockey. because there aren’t enough victories for women’s anything.
