14: What is one of your OC’s secrets?

I guess you could call it a secret, but Darva is remiss to talk about the previous lovers he’s had. Particularly one specific lover: Sorrell. He almost settled down with him, almost married him, almost had a family with him. It wasn't long after Darva left the clan and he had settled into the Ansburg Alienage. He was a whole flurry of emotions and very homesick and Sorrell was a great comfort to him. It was never that Sorrell was aiming to take advantage of Darva; he was really very genuine and cared for him. The two cared quite a bit for each other and were in love. That sort of bright, exciting and giddy new love; perhaps infatuation would be best to call it. But that faded with time and Darva got over his homesickness and got the itch to travel again. He wanted Sorrell to come with him, but he didn’t want to leave behind his home and everything he knew.

So the two of them parted ways and never saw each other again. Darva doesn’t know if he regrets leaving behind, but he does see it as another way his life could have gone. He takes comfort in how it would only have been different, not better or worse, because to know the difference he would have had to have lived that life.

“Hey Knives, how you holding up?” Varric asked as he sat next to Faralen.

She stared out into the distance where Vaimah stood, her eyes seeking out the changes since they had last seen each other all those months ago. His hair now had grey in it, a large streak was coming in at the peak of his hairline, a new scar cut across his right cheek in a jagged shape, like a fork of lightning. She could barely make them out as night fell upon them. These changes were superficial but reinforced the reality that Faralen had trouble facing the most. That the person she was closest to in the world didn’t really remember her, didn’t even remember his found family.

10 years, a whole decade of memories disappeared with a hit to the head. A decade in which the two had gone through so much. Too much death, some joy and their entire friendship wiped from memory.

“I was going to tell him I loved him,” Faralen admitted, leaning forward to stoke the fire. “When- if, if I ever saw him again,”

“Oh Knives, it’s taken you this long to realise?” Varric places a hand softly on Faralen’s shoulder in comfort, she surprisingly leans into the gesture, relaxing slightly. Her eyes were still fixed on the fire, anywhere but Vaimah.

“You only know what you had when it’s gone.” She replied, a defeated smile on her lips.

this here’s Katara, my “the last thing i wanna do is lead” Valo-Kas mercenary girl turned “actually, being in power gives me all the resources i ever needed to stay safe, i’ll do everything i can to not lose this position” inquisitor!she’s a  Tal-Vashoth mage, who witnessed her grandmother being forcefully roped into the whole Saarebas business before her parents left the Qun, so naturally she’s very keen on staying out of the spotlight, and as far away as possible from parties who are looking at her a little bit too interested.

prior to getting sent to the Conclave and being declared the Herald of Andraste, she was actually helping out my Hawke with Kirkwall, so she has first hand experiences with all the “when shit hits the fan” moments! only she thought she’d gotten good at avoiding them herself, while clearly she hadn’t though.

she initially only agreed to help the Inquisition because her plan to just r u n away didn’t quite work out the way she thought it would. and now, with an arm that’s constantly in pain, a terrible fear of every qunari who follows the qun, and every templar she comes across, all eyes are decidedly on her. suddenly people call her the “Herald of Andraste”, although she wants nothing to do with that. suddenly she’s “The Inquisitor” and slowly but surely the people she feared look at her in adoration and treat her with respect.

it’s a complicated thing with her, because she doesn’t enjoy anything about this in the slightest. she doesn’t like being tied to one place and she doesn’t want to be the number one contact point for every tiny grievance that needs settling. what she DOES enjoy, though, is that she can wield her magic without having to fear the possibility that someone will forcibly remove her horns, chain her up and sew her mouth shut. the one good thing about being the Inquisitor is that she doesn’t have to hide anymore. and once that realization settles in, she does everything to gain more power.

it makes her reckless at best, and at some points downright cruel. it’s a good thing her friendships with the companions are as tight as they are, because they always help her find her way back to her usual self. they understand she’s not doing it for the sake of being evil, but because she’s a woman who witnessed her fair share of abuse towards her people and is scared it’ll happen to her and her family again. Hawke coming to Skyhold with Katara’s brother in tow is an important moment for her, because it’s the moment where she finally gets to work through her trauma with him. he hasn’t been doing well at all either.
