Watched the amazing Dave Chappelle comedy special the other day.  He kills.  But… did I ever tell you about that time I hung out with Dave Chappelle during the height of his fame and had no idea who he was?  So um… at the time I didn’t have tv.  And barely had a computer. And… I liked it that way.  I didn’t want to be connected to *the machine*.  I wasn’t following pop culture at all.  I was practicing Buddhism and writing poetry and performing a bit and was pretty blissed out.  So… I was at Central Park.  Sitting in a gazebo by the water and writing.  This beautiful family – dad, mom and two little boys - came up to me and asked if I could take some pictures of them.  So of course I did.  I was struck by how beautiful and loving they all seemed.  The dad started playing and running around with the boys.  And the mom sat next to me and I asked her where they were visiting from!  (lol). She told me about the farm they had and how they were happy to spend the day in the park as a family.  We chatted for awhile.  I really liked her.  Then… out of nowhere… a guy runs up to the dad – who was playing with his kids – and asks for an autograph and picture.  Then a few more people gather asking for pictures.  Dave was gracious… but obviously just wanted time with his family. More people gathered.  I didn’t like the feel of the crowd.  I smiled and said bye and slipped away.  One of the people gathering told me it was Dave Chappelle – who I had heard of in passing.  I later watched his show and found out he is one of the best comedians ever in the history of the world.  All that said… happy to have shared this very human moment with him and his family. And, while I am more plugged in than I used to be, the culture of celebrity hasn’t won me over. #
