While I didn't get much done yesterday, I'm making up for it by studying on the train since I'm going away for the weekend! Many good trains out and about today.

Hi! My name's Blue, and I'm studying for an integrated master's degree in biology at the University of Oxford. As my degree becomes less of a bachelor's and more of a master's, I wanted to share my experiences and use this blog as a record of my time here! Feel free to ask me anything about studying biology at Oxford or otherwise.
Interests:
Virology
Genomics
Epidemiology
Bioinformatics
Cell biology
Hobbies:
My main hobby in term-time is rowing. I also enjoy sewing, science fiction books, horror movies and caring for my pitcher plant Paula.
About me:
I am a former state comprehensive student who initially intended to go into something medicine-adjacent. I was pressured into applying for Oxford, but in hindsight I am very glad for that! Since then I have fallen in love with virology and bioinformatics. Also, my degree has become secondary to my burgeoning rowing career.
Feel free to drop me an ask any time!
My mock grant proposal for my master's project is now done! Which officially means I am done with the bachelors portion of my degree..... Incredible!
Continuing on my Career Journey! Tried to apply for a fund to do work over the summer, but the application window has coincided with the biggest rowing races of the year so I haven't had time to finish it. On the plus side, my supervisor for next year has mentioned the potential for a fully paid summer internship, so I might be alright after all? I'll just be disappointing my tutor 😭 the past few days has been such an exercise in rejection therapy and sending embarrassing emails

Got rejected from that internship. I worked super hard on my application and interview, and I had all the right skills, but I was beaten by people with more experience than me. I don't know how I can get experience considering I can't afford to do unpaid work like a lot of people at my university. I'm always going to be behind on that, and it feels like that was my last chance at getting any kind of work experience before I graduate. I'm terrified that I'm not going to be able to get a job that I want after graduation, and I'll be stuck behind a bar for the rest of my life.
My to do list for the day:
Breakfast
Check emails
Finish going over protein engineering
Lunch
Washing up
Genomics revision but in a cafe
Weights
Dinner
Mandatory Fun Thing Time - Read Some Book!
Yes I put meals on my to do list otherwise I forget to eat
DOUBLE HIT OF AWESOME STUFF TODAY! I finished my programming assessments, and also I got invited for an interview for an internship with a disease surveillance company! This will be the first time I've ever interviewed for a job in my field so I'm pretty nervous, but whatever happens I'll be doing something I've never done before so it's a total win.
