The weird and wonderful bacteria art of Zachary Copfer..yes bacteria
Zachary Copfer attended the University of Cincinnati, where he earned his MFA. He now uses his art as a vehicle to rediscover the mysteries of science.
I have called upon my background in microbiology to employ various bacteria as my artistic medium of choice.
The process he has created has been coined ‘bacteriography‘. Bacteriography consists of shooting radiation through a negative onto a petri dish covered with bacteria. The end product is a plate of bacteria that have grown to form a photographic image.

BACTERIOGRAPHY by ZACHARY COPFER
Bacteriography consists of shooting radiations through a negative on to a petri dish covered with bacteria.
The end product is a plate of bacteria that have grown to form a photographic image.
The process is very similar to darkroom photography only the enlarger has been replaced by a radiation source and iinstead of photo sensitive paper this process uses a petri dish coated with a living bacterial emulsion.

Bacteriography, the method of creating photographs out of bacteria.
Zachary Copfer has been experimenting with the medium ever since he invented it while getting his masters. He's now preparing a show of bacteriography to exhibit at Art Prize in September.

© Zachary Copfer, 2012, Bacteriography
"As a former microbiologist recently turned visual artist, I seek to create work that is less of an intersection of art and science and more of a genuine fusion of the two. During my graduate research I invented a new medium that combines photographic process with microbiological practices.
The process is very similar to darkroom photography only the enlarger has been replaced by a radiation source and instead of photographic paper this process uses a petri dish coated with a living bacterial emulsion: a new photographic process that I have coined 'Bacteriography'.
Put simply, this is a process to develop photographs in plates of bacteria. That is to say, the bacteria literally grow to form photographic images. I believe that great beauty and poetry reside within the theories woven by scientists. And that it is through the unification of art and science that these treasures can be fully explored and made accessible to the world at large." (Zachary Copfer)

Bacteriography
Microbiologist and artist Zachary Copfer is passionate about science and its applicability to art. He has created a technique that makes use of genetically modified E. coli bacteria to print photographs.
