MicroBiology: The Bacterial Cell Envelope comprises the plasma membrane and cell wall of a bacteria, plus an bacterial outer membrane, if one is present (i.e. in Gram-negative bacteria). Most bacterial cell envelopes fall into two major categories: Gram-positive and Gram-negative.
Gram-negative bacteria are surrounded by a thin peptidoglycan cell wall, which itself is surrounded by an outer membrane containing lipopolysaccharide. Gram-positive bacteria lack an outer membrane but are surrounded by layers of peptidoglycan many times thicker than is found in the Gram-negatives. Threading through these layers of peptidoglycan are long anionic polymers, called teichoic acids.. Â
The Two Illustrations of Gram Positive Bacterial Cell Wall & Gram Negative Bacterial Cell Wall, are shown below....u will have a better detailed explaination and overviiew there.
