Black smoke flew into the wispy sky, curling into the stars, the fire coming from the upstairs of your house unrelenting. As soon as you’d dashed out into the dark night and fell to the hard ground, dirt smearing your hands, the police sirens blared in your ears, as bad as a kid with a kazoo, as loud as some stupid vocal warm-up.
You choked on the sulfur in the air as tears blurred your vision, dripping onto the earth. You only knew one thing—- you were to be punished for this, the body of your best friend remaining upstairs, though it was all a freak accident.
The cop cars began to roll up, and black boots hit the ground hard before a few faces appeared before you, one female officer with marshy hazel eyes and a smattering of freckles striking you most. Her auburn hair was kept mostly tied back with a few loose strands to frame her face. She seemed young, early twenties.
“Alright. Ten-twenty-three, over,” She spoke into a radio before sliding it back into her belt, holding various staple police items including a taser, a couple pairs of handcuffs, a flashlight and a dark switchblade. But what you eyed was the gun. Your mind jumped immediately to your inexplicable death.
The officer nodded to her coworkers and turned to you, stepping closer. You got up and dusted yourself off. Your throat closed in fear. Like anybody, you’d only come in contact with the cops when someone else had done something wrong. Not you.
“Officer Williams,” She sighed, introducing herself. “Can you tell me what happened here?”
“My best friend is dead upstairs.” Okay, great start.
You began to give Officer Williams the lowdown. A freak electrical fire led to a supposed arson charge. None of this was your fault! But would she believe you?
“Thank you for the information, miss.”
“Am I good to go? Will you guys take me somewhere—” You pleaded, heart hammering.
“Well…”
She had this sweet, low voice, almost raspy in nature as she delivered the news.
“You’re gonna have to come with me. Turn around.”
Before you could heed, her practiced hands pressed into your shoulder blades and spun you around. You heard the handcuffs clank as she tightened them up around your wrists.
The other officers waited for the fire department while Williams stayed with you. The cold metal on your arms matched the chill of the air and you panicked silently, shivering, waiting for the warmth of the cop car to bring you to some kind of salvation.
“Yeah,” She breathed almost in satisfaction, eyeing you as she shuffled you up to the car. “Good. Okay. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law, etcetera…”
She skipped most of the whole spiel as if already knowing you were innocent. Or guilty.
“Come on. And, down you go.”
You slid into the backseat, and immediately that black mesh was pulled down in front of you. You couldn’t tell who was driving as the doors slammed shut and the car was put in drive, but all you knew was that this was a journey that had you bracing for the destination.
You finally arrived at the station. The sterile environment did nothing to calm your nerves as a faceless officer pulled you through into the interrogation room, a solid gray mass of fear and a conglomerate of years of real criminals mentally breaking down. The air hummed. You were placed in an uncomfortable chair, and you stared at that spotless dark floor, hoping for anything to stare at, even grout between the tiles, but nothing.
“Okay. Miss…” You jumped, although her voice was the least bit startling. It was that voice.
“Officer Will–”
“Ellie,” She almost smiled. “Ellie.”
“Aren’t you not supposed to say that?” You asked, voice trembling.
“Hm.” The officer shrugged, still in uniform.
“So. This is the part where I'm supposed to scare you, I guess. It's not uncommon for even innocent people to be afraid of cops, though I'm not sure I'm that threatening,” Officer Williams— Ellie— simpered.
You noticed she fidgeted with her hands a bit, lacing her fingers together back and forth. Her sleeve was rolled up just a bit, revealing an arm tattoo of a moth and a type of plant you couldn't make out from what you could barely see. It stretched toward her hand.
“What do you mean, scare me?”
“I dunno. What do you think?” You heard the question in her tone as you stared at the camera in the corner that appeared to be…. off.
“Um, isn't there supposed to be a camera?”
“Oh. That. It's broken, you know.”
“Okay?” You could've been on a reality show, all you knew.
“Just tell me if you're innocent or not. Because I know you're guilty of one thing.”
It was hard to believe your best friend was dead, choking on smoke. You couldn't get her out in time. You felt tears well up again just thinking about it, god was this your fa–
“Staring at me.”
“What?” You took in a breath. “Isn't that a bit… unprofessional?”
“Well, sweetheart, I'm a bit of an unconventional officer.”
A pause included a bit of a flush to heat your cheeks. This was definitely not how things were meant to go.
“And I know you're innocent. You've done nothing. But… I know they’ll try to jail you anyway. The justice system's fucked like that.” Ellie swore, leaning back in her chair.
“You're the only suspect.” She eyed you again, noticing your blush with those hazel eyes, specks of green and brown flickering with something dark from across the table.
“I guess…” your voice quieted. “How are you going to ask me questions— uh— Ellie?” You didn't like the way you called a cop by her first name. But it was a pretty name. A fitting one.
“I have a way of getting you out of this,” Ellie offered. She sat with a spread of her legs, leaned back in her chair as if it was the most comfortable position to be in.
“But I have to ask you something first….” She used your name slowly. Just your last name.
“Do I make you nervous?” She smirked.
“What? I mean, sure, you're an officer, and I'm practically done for—”
“No, I mean, a different kind of nervousness. It seems like you like it.”
“Huh?” You almost yelled. What was going on?
“Don't play coy with me. I can do anything to you, you know. I can lock you up for years,” She threatened.
“So. Tell me.”
She was dead serious.
“I don't like anything, but I– guess you're an attractive lady…” you fumbled.
She chuckled. Jesus, the sound made your insides weak. You felt this sort of unrelenting desire in your stomach, churning with warmth, so wrong.
“Thanks.” She grinned.
“Now let me take those cuffs off.”
Right. They were still on you. And, not to mention, you still wore your dainty little nightgown.
“Unless you like it too, hey, I won't judge,” she threw her hands up.
“Stop it,” you grumbled.
“Just tell me if I'm free to go or not!” You struggled in the cuffs with a grunt.
“It's more fun watching you squirm.”
Face hot, heart pounding, you met her arrogant gaze.
“Tell me what I have to do.”
to be continued.... :)
