Patrick Spikes, a former Walt Disney World cast member, was sentenced in court today for stealing and re-selling several items belonging to Disney.
Patrick Spikes (aka @BackdoorDisney on twitter) avoided jail time (other than time served after his initial arrest), got ten years of probation, 250 hours of community service, and has to pay $25,308 in restitution to Disney.
Dude got off easy.
It all makes me very glad that when I was running the former “backstagemagic” blog, (if there is anything at that old tumblr URL now, it’s not me) I just posted what I found online and things people sent to me. Even on park trips, going backstage to get pics was a no-go for me. If you cannot respect the park, you shouldn't be reporting on the park.
BackDoorDisney was arrested earlier for stealing props from the Haunted Mansion (costumes, wigs and a tiara worn by the animatronics). He then resold the items to others. The police report also seems to confirm that Buzzy was stolen and still missing. Patrick Spikes, the guy behind @backdoordisney on twitter, was arrested again, this time in connection with animatronic costume pieces stolen from Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion, and the related arrest warrant shows that this is just one of many items stolen and tied to Spikes.
In looking at his twitter, though, I’m guessing he’s out on bail. That, or someone else is posting on the account for him.

The strange Disney time on twitter just keeps on coming.
Iger is misquoted, DisTwitter (and tumblr) get angry about what they think he meant. Iger’s subsequent statements and re-edits of the article don’t really make it any better.
Iger goes away on twitter, comes back to twitter, then goes away again.
And now BackDoorDisney (as far as I know the only suspect in the theft of at least parts of the Buzzy animatronic from Wonders of Life) is back, and teasing that not only are they gonna tell their side of the story, they’re gonna take some people down in the process.

Fuck backdoordisney. A major Disney tradition is preserving the magic and all the creatures in the cobwebs of the internet who support his actions only make things worse for CMs. You’re not sticking it to Iger, or the man, or whomever. You ruin shit for hardworking people who are constantly underpaid and underrappreciated. And look what it’s led to: Grand THEFT.
Imagine how much harder it is going to be now for CMs to get to and through work. Imagine how CMs walking through the utilidors will feel under the scrutiny of what I’m sure will be heightened security. Imagine how a dog-tired CM is going to feel having their personal bags even more thoroughly checked at the end of a shift.
As if the onstage pressures aren’t hard enough. If you want backstage knowledge of Disney so bad THEN GO WORK THERE. It’s a privilege to be have access to it, because it’s a damn hard job. Work during a peak time like spring break, summer break, or winter break. Work when something new is announced and the park is full of journalists hounding you for information. Work when a major change is announced and know-it-all passholders are in your face telling you that you’re wrong.
It’s been almost 10 years since I’ve worked for Disney (at the haunted mansion, no less) and I have a career now, but I still maintain that working for Disney is the hardest job I’ve ever had.
You can blame Iger, or upper mgmt, or Walt’s ghost himself for Disney parks losing its magic. But by supporting all this, you share the blame too. You have a hand in destroying the magic.
