Back Take From Closed Guard
In today’s blog post, you are going to learn a simple and basic fundamental technique that has been proven to work at the highest level of competitions – the back take from closed guard. This technique is one of the basic fundamental techniques that you learn during your first month of training jiu jitsu. However, don’t let the fact that this is a simple fundamental technique fool you. It has…

Wednesday morning no gi with Keith. Back into the back control to the truck series today:Â
From the back mount with both hooks in, use your left hand to get an over-the-knuckles grip on opponent’s left hand.Â
Bring your left foot under opp’s left knee and flex the foot to get an anchor.
Fall over to your right side, landing on your elbow while lifting your left leg with foot still flexed to keep control.
Cross your legs (left on top of right) and snake your right foot under opp’s bottom (right) foot.
Use your knees to bump under opponent’s butt to scoot them up and over so they’re perpendicular to you with their hips on your body and shoulders on the mat. Focusing on bringing your knees up to your chest.
Make sure your legs are locked and your right foot is flexed behind opp’s foot and you have control over their right leg. Their left should be flapping in the breeze.
Grab opp’s left arm with your left wrist and bring their forearm to your chest so it’s parallel with your spine. Your right hand should hook under their elbow and pin it to your chest. Welcome to the truck.
From here, bring your knees up towards your chest to bring your opp’s feet within reach.
Reach your right hand over opp’s left leg and grab across their toes.
Make sure your right toes are pointed up and pull opp’s toes toward your head to apply the calf slicer submission. You can either figure four your legs and push down with your left heel as you pull or flex your right foot and push your left foot against it.
We also covered the banana split and the twister from here. Followed up with some positional rolls and some live.Â

Wednesday morning no gi with Keith. More back attacks! Today we continued yesterday’s choke after falling to the overhook side, but using an RNC instead of the lapel. A nice detail, once you have opp’s left hand out of the equation:
To remove opp’s right arm from defending, get a grip on opp’s wrist with your left hand and pull your right arm out.
Weave your right arm through opp’s right (under their biceps) and get an overhand grip on their knuckles.Â
Bring your head over to the right side of opp’s head and bring your left arm across their throat to set up the RNC.
Lots of positional work from the back and the mount and then live rolls.

Tuesday morning with Keith. After warming up we got into another back attack, this time focusing on falling to the overhook side because we were wearing gis. This is classically the side we’re taught to fall to and attack but Keith says it works better since the lapel control/choke is always there. Here’s the sequence:
Starting on opponent’s back with your right arm over their shoulder in a seatbelt grip, stick your right leg forward and plant your left foot on their left hip to help get your right in position for a deep hook.
Fall to your right side and bring your right calf across opp’s belt. Lock up the body triangle if possible.
With your left hand, circle under opp’s left arm and get a grip across their knuckles.
Push your left hand down and bring your left heel up to lock opp’s arm in place. Pinch with your left thigh to keep it in place.
Pull out your left arm.
Lock your right ankle over your left.
If opp is defending with their right hand, use a sleeve grip to pull their arm off and get a deep lapel grip with your right hand (across their throat).Â
Get a grip on opp’s right lapel with your left.
Pull your right elbow back to finish the choke.
We also worked on a defense against an opponent who tries to lock your crossed feet. If they try that shit, just push hard against the back of their head so they don’t have the leverage to lean back and bridge. Lots of positional rolls afterwards!
Why Craig Jones Actively Uses The BJJ Crab Ride To Take The Back
BJJ CRAB RIDE BACK TAKE BY CRAIG JONES
Craig Jones is a leg lock expert with the majority of his submission wins in competition coming from leg locks. In his instructional video, Craig discusses his approach in preventing leg attacks. In this video, we see a sample of how he approaches a 50/50 entanglement from the top position.
He discusses the BJJ Crab Ride! What is this position? Sounds like a silly name. Well, it’s an effective position with its origins in wrestling.
In the context of the sport/martial art of Brazilian jiu jitsu the Crab Ride is a type of control, often regarded as an intermediate position in a grappling exchange, through which an attacker will make use of “hooks” (bend of the foot)… Click To Tweet
Craig Jones shows us an interesting transition that allows him to use the Crab Ride to escape the 50/50 position and take his opponent’s back. The Position allows him to protect his legs from attacks and transition himself to a dominate position over his opponent.

How to make your rear naked choke tight?
Eddie Bravo gives some tips on developing a strong anaconda-like squeeze for a rear naked choke.
You can practice on your own. In a seated position, you can bring your knee up to your chest and act like you’re doing a choke on your knee. Wrap the choking arm around the knee and grab your bicep, bring your other hand in like you’re slicing over the top of your knee. You’ll have your wrist at your chin, with your head down. A tight choke should hurt your forearm.
A less painful way would be to put your choking arm under your knee.
You could practice on both knees, and he suggests you hold it for 10 seconds.
When practicing on a partner, you’ll get the over/under, get your hooks in, and develop a powerful hand-fight to counter your partner’s defense. Get the choking arm in as deep as possible and climb the hand over their shoulder. Finally, quickly get the other hand behind your opponent’s head and finish the choke.
