Week 2&3 23/04/2018 - 07/05/2018
A very stressful busy couple of weeks but it was all SO exciting!
At the beginning of the week I focused on tidying up outfit 4 because i had been chosen to be featured in a series of short videos that will close the catwalk show for the uni under the theme “punk”. I got some stills from the MA photography student that i was paired with (pictured above). Once i was happy with it I moved on to the other 2 jackets (outfits 1 and 3) and finishing the top collars and putting in the sleeves.
I already had outfit 3s sleeves (the mens jacket) and these were fairly easy to put in. I had to put in the studs before i put in the sleeves. This was a little scary but once they were in place i was very happy with how they turned out. I then finishined putting in the trimmings into the sleeve and shoulder. Its ready for sewing up and finishing.
Putting in Outfit 1s sleeves was easy as there was no ease and i treated it like a seam. making the sleeve was the hardest part of this but after all my toiles i knew what i was doing. I added a tight pad stitch along the canvasing crease to help it stay in shape.
I also started on my 4th jacket (outfit 2 the long jacket) i’d already prepared the canvasing. so that was easy i just had to insert the eyelets. I only did the ones going though the cloth as i could’t find and sliver washers and i didn't want to use the gold ones where they would be on show. But cause they were going through the facing it was okay to leave them till last. I’d also made a decision to insert some hidden pockets into the slits, after looking at a tail coat and remembering the hidden pockets in the tail I was inspired.
I also continued with the trousers. The men was straight forward and i had already inserted all the pocket. The women's all had the same pockets so i did then all together. Because of the shape of the waist band i have to hand sew the point and it was a little fiddly but with my balance marks on my pattern they both went in well.
With the zips on the fronts for Outfit 2 I cut down the waistband canvasing to reduce the bulk and I very carefully inserted the zips. I also put tape around the zips to make them neat and was going to make a guard however the pocket bags reached over enough to cover then so I have used then as the guards. this helps reduce the bulk as well.
The backs the women's trousers have grown on waistbands. this was new to make but easy enough to do and me and my tutor had decided that i would extend the lining at the back and fold it under to act as a curtain as one piece and then carefully stab stitch it the the canvasing.
I’m hoping to get all my garments apart from my waistcoats to a hand sewing stage by the end of the week. I feel like i’m on good track. I think i had over estimated and under estimated timings but they had all balanced out and I’m really pleased with where I’m at. I still have alot to do and with my stop motion videos as well. I think i will focus on the harder aspects of my technical as i would like to show the processes of those. I also need to set up a website to present these. Its going to be full throttle for the next mouth!
