After a black tie event with standard issue dinner jacket in its most basic form: peak lapel, dress shirt, barathea silk, white ps, patent leather oxfords. The uniformity is part of the dress code. A lot of people simply resort to an ordinary black suit, white shirt, ready-made bow tie and black shoes. The ladies know better and use the opportunity to really shine.

Pre-WWI, officers' service dress was made of serge, the same itchy woollen fabric as the other ranks but in a better quality. Such garments are uncommon or even pretty rare to find nowadays. You can see one in my British WWI officer impression (which will soon be replaced with a repro whipcord jacket because it's too rare to expose in the field IMO).
