📍  outside of côte  &  co.  bookshop,  mid  afternoon.

"  it's  not  what  it  looks  like,  really  !  "  of  course,  it's  a  sight  to  see  nevertheless.  chanel  hunched  over,  a  mountain  of  paperbacks  up  to  her  neck  in  hand  with  no  bag  as  proof  of  purchase.  it's  about  saving  the  environment  though  !  her  hands  and  arms  work  just  as  well  as  some  flimsy  bag  could.  "  i  paid  for  all  of  these  ...  with  my  hard  earned  money.  "  and  the  generosity  of  a  guest  who'd  handed  a  wad  of  euros  over  and  told  her  a  day  prior  :  treat  yourself to something pretty,  chanel  !  jokes  on  him  though,  no  way  he'd  think  she  was  blowing  this  play  money  on  raunchy  romance  books  with  shirtless  men  on  the  cover.  the  same  embarrassing  covers  that  threatened  to  spill  out  of  her  hands  with  each  passing  moment.  "  you  wouldn't  ...  um,  be  able  to  give  me  hand  would  you  ?  they really rushed me out of there. "

midnight  blinks  &  becomes  a  distant  hour  when  two  o'clock  lays  itself  on  the  table  &  asks  romeo  why  he's  still  awake  .  dawn  but  an  afterthought  as  insomnia  &  the  cold  sweats  urge  romeo  out  of  bed  ,  out  of  his  apartment  .  his  restless  legs  pushing  through  double  doors  until  the  complex's  courtyard  echoes  his  footsteps  ,  something  in  his  lungs  desperate  for  fresh  air  . 

he  breathes  in  &  eases  a  ragged  breath  out  .  that  twinge  of  suffocation  leaving  his  body  when  he  reaches  in  his  pocket  for  his  lucky  strikes  .  however  ,  upon  digging  for  his  lighter  ,  its  engraved  metal  revealing  the  trauma  behind  the  idrissi  name  ,  romeo  realizes  he's  dropped  it  on  his  quest  outside  .  pocket  empty  .  panic  rising  .  romeo  spinning  ‘round  to  retrace  his  steps  where  he  runs  into  them  &  the  zippo  lighter  that’s  been  lost  .

headlights   emerge   from   a   distance   ,   illuminating   an   attire   worth   more   than   his   paycheck   as   romeo   aligns   tires   to   curb   &   then   kills   the   engine   .   he   doesn't   worry   himself   with   the   wait   ,   tension   already   forming   in   his   wrists   when   he   unravels   his   grip   from   the   steering   wheel   ,   a   reluctant   release   before   his   seatbelt   clicks   &   he's   exiting   the   vehicle   .   he   refrains   from   a   greeting   .   romeo's   gaze   peering   over   the   hood   toward   his   client   where   eye   contact   is   made   &   the   night's   breeze   converses   between   them   .   words   but   a   formality   romeo   isn't   paid   enough   to   entertain   ,   his   terse   lips   matching   a   tight   jaw   when   he   commits   to   an   about   -   face   &   circles   around   to   the   passenger   side   of   the   car   .   after   all   ,   this   is   what   he's   been   hired   to   do   .   so   opening   their   door   should   suffice   enough   ,   romeo   propping   it   with   roughened   hands   for   them   to   slide   into   the   back   . 

eden’s  not  here  for  the  spectacle.  she’s  tucked  into  the end  of  the  long  dinner  table,  black  silk  dress,  diamonds  winking  whenever  she  turns  her  head.  champagne  untouched.  a  faint,  knowing  smile  playing  on  her  mouth  as  the  room  hums  with  too  many  introductions  and  even  more  ambition.

conversations  swirl  around  her—loud,  eager,  desperate  to  impress.  eden  just  listens,  absently  tracing  the  rim  of  her  glass,  quietly  ranking  everyone’s  shoes  and  secrets.

a  shadow  falls  across  her  table.  she  looks  up,  meets  their  eyes  with  that  lazy  kind  of  confidence  only  people  born  for  spotlights  can  muster.

“you  gonna  sit?”  eden  asks,  voice  warm  but  edged.  “or  just  planning  to  stand  there  until  the  caviar’s  gone?”
