AXS Lab evaluation and response to COVID-19
IntroductionĀ
AXS Lab exists to support people with disabilities and raise awareness of the issues they face via new media, films, and the power of story. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis AXS Lab will shift its focus from ordinary programs to focus on awareness raising and disseminating advice as it affects people with disabilities.Ā We will cover the threat people with disabilities face, our response to this threat and how you can help us beat COVID-19.Ā
How it affects us
Many people with disabilities will fall into the at-risk category depending on the nature of their disability e.g if they have illnesses which suppress their autoimmune system or cause respiratory issues, both of which are causes for concern in the case of COVID-19 infection.Ā Plus, those with physical disabilities often face discrimination and barriers which will make it harder to follow the general advice and may put them at a higher risk of contracting the disease. Ā In recent days there has been renewed chatter about the threat of discrimination against people with disabilities in end-of-life decisions as healthcare providers prepare for a shortage of lifesaving resources.Ā In our previous Tumblr post we go into more detail of the threats faced by people with disabilities, click to read more.Ā
Coronavirus cases, recoveries and deaths
AXS Lab is situated in New York City, currently the situation is concerning, with the number of cases doubling every few days, currently standing at just above 15,000, and over 25,000 in the whole of New York State. In New York City alone there are 930,100 people with disabilities, 11% of its total population.Ā The threat of COVID-19 is becoming more and more apparent as data scientists reveal the sharp rise in cases in the last few weeks compared to the first couple of months. The number of infected cases is growing quickly and will continue. As of 25 March 2020 there are 436,159 cases globally according to John Hopkins University. Ā With the WHO saying on Tuesday that āthe US has the potential to become the new epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic.āĀ
Our Response
AXS Lab has an established audience from past projects which includes: people with disabilities, disability rights activists and supporters.Ā In order to combat the blanket advice given to all regarding self-isolation and social-distancing, information will be written and disseminated through social media pages.Ā The traditional media will also be engaged to highlight the problems that people with disabilities face and to stem the discrimination in advice and emergency policies to follow. In addition AXS Lab will act as a funnel for all advice, updates and news of new measures in regards to COVID-19 which apply directly to those individuals with a disability. This will include publishing information on AXS Lab social platforms and directing our followers to other resources to check information depending on geographic location.Ā
To alleviate anxiety and stress caused, AXS Lab will encourage those more harshly affected by this virus and measures that have been put in place, to reach out to the organization via social media andĀ we will share their stories and experiences, further highlighting issues and providing a network and moral support for people who are struggling. Ā AXS Lab will encourage supporters to provide specific help to people they know who have disabilities and/or underlying health conditions and different methods of how community support can be provided will be debated and shared with our audiences. AXS Lab will also be sharing ways in which people can advocate for the rights of people with disabilities amongst the growing fear of rights being curtailed in the midst of policy changes and insufficient resources in healthcare.Ā
Overall, AXS Lab hopes to ignite a supportive network for people with disabilities who may be having a particularly difficult time in order to educate and encourage others, as well as providing moral support and a community for those who need it so we can all make it through this uncertain and testing time.Ā

Subway Challenge
After spending a fun-filled day at Highland Park and in the West Village, I was hanging out with my assistants Joel and Giorge when Giorge made an unusual suggestion. "With two of us here," he said, "we don't need to worry about stairs going back to your apartment." I laughed, as he was right. With the two of them with me, they could carry me up any stairways. "Okay," I said, "Let's go." So we hopped on the L train to Williamsburg. Once there, we got two volunteers to help us.. one to carry the wheelchair and the other to film the whole thing.. as Giorge and Joel carried me up four flights of stairs. "I never realized there were four flights of stairs here," Giorge said. This is something one doesn't realize until getting up the stairs becomes a challenge. At the end of it all, my arms were hurting from the pressure of holding on to Giorge and Joel. As I said this to this to the camera, I realized the ridiculousness of my comment, as they must of been exhausted and pain themselves from the four flights of stairs. Ā

Missing My Son
There is no way to express what it feels like to have someone in your life and watch them grow up and up and disappear. Jase has been part of my life for the past three and a half years and now heās but a image on Skype that I see for an hour a day. Not that thatās even a good hour, because like a typical three-year-old, heās running around, turns off the camera, plays with Mommy, and barely holds a conversation. Regardless, I still love talking to him and watching him getting older. However, that is my ultimate frustration.. is that Iām watching as the young person that I know and love gets older before my eyes on Skype. It just feels like Iām losing time. He doesnāt get to be around me and watch as I lose more of my ability to use my hands or to see or to even talk to him. When we get on Skype, itās exhausting for me, as Iām not able to talk to him properly, because of my vocal volume and challenges with speaking properly. I wish he was in New York City and not in Austin, Texas. Itās so far away that I canāt get there. I canāt live there because the disability benefits offered there arenāt sufficient. Thatās what Iām here in New York and here is where I must stay. Until things change, this is my home and I just wish to God that Jase was part of my life here.
In other news, Iām still going strong in getting the work out there. This week, we did an amazing photo shoot for the AXS Lab Company. Everyone that is working on the AXS Lab team showed up and we had a stellar photo shoot with photographer, Ellen Croteau, who did an amazing job taking the photos of the entire crew together and one by one. The photos and bios of the team will be live on the website in about one week at axslab.org. In the meantime, down below is a group photo that was taken of part of the team. Iām very thankful that everyone pulled together and is continuing to help me on this journey of getting my life and non-profit in order. There are some big exciting things about to happen. While Iām not sure what all of that is going to be, I can sure feel it. So stay tuned, and together weāll see whatās on the horizon.
Me Before You: POO!
āLive boldy.ā
I havenāt seen this movie but quite a buzz is going around the disability community and its supporters and in the opinions of anyone with half a brain. At the end of the flick, the main character of this movie, a quadriplegic in a wheelchair, boldy kills himself, making a lie the movieās taglines ofĀ ālive boldyā-Ā ālive wellā -Ā ājust live.ā How? How do those phrases fit with the apparent theme of suicide? Suicide seen as the generous, noble choice for the disabled?Ā
I do have frustration with my disability, being a severe quadriplegic myself, but I consider suicide as failure, and something that I would ever do. The idea of it being the best option for a disabled person is a slap in the face for myself- my worth in this world- and a slap in the face for everybody, with or without a disability, who struggles with something that they are trying to overcome.Ā
Shame on the filmmakers of this movie. I have to wonder how something that takes as much effort and labor as a the making of a movie can have so many people involved and yet not one person who could look at this and say,Ā āyou know what? maybe not such a good idea.ā The actor who plays the quadriplegic is not even disabled. Of course.Ā
I can go on and on about this. People with disabilties are constantly portrayed as timid, the villain, and asexuals. These are just three of the tropes that I have seen over and over in cinema. It seems that the only time the disabled are portrayed as anything other than these tropes, itās using non-disabled actors.
In short, my review of this movie, that I havenāt seen, is two disabled thumbs DOWN. POO!
