Am I alone in feeling like the transgender being an umbrella that includes genderqueer should be reversed? Should genderqueer not be the umbrella term? Queer means "not normative" while trans means "across" or "opposite." So shouldn't the word that's more inclusive be an umbrella over the term that connotes only a few? "Not normative" can include gender-neutral, -fluid, trans-, etc; but "opposite" can only mean one or the other, leaving out -neutral and -fluid.
Is 'gender-queer' not the umbrella term? I was under the impression that it was o_O Well, if we're getting super technical, then 'trans' does work fine for an umbrella term because if your gender doesn't match your sex, technically you're trans. I agree that gender queer works better for an umbrella term because the possibilities seem a bit more endless, whereas people tend to think of trans as specifically FTM or MTF. I'm pretty sue that just 'trans' with no asterisk means MTF/FTM, and 'trans*' with the asterisk includes everything whose gender doesn't match their sex, I think (please correct me if I'm wrong!), so really either term works fine, I suppose it's just a matter of which one you prefer to use.
