For some reason Monster by Skillet and Nightmare by set it off remind me of inflictors, specifically Sophie like how she was scared of her power and Nightmare like how Bronte inflicted on her
Oh you're so right! Both of these songs have some truly excellent lines--too many to highlight them all! Thank you for the suggestions!
I think "So stay away from me, the beast is ugly / I feel the rage and I just can't hold it" captures the internal struggle and experience of being an inflictor with clarity. Don't get close, their power hurts, their power is ugly, their power will escape. Especially with the rage comment, as that's a feeling Sophie draws on often
There's also "I created a monster / A beast inside my brain," because it's like this all-consuming thing that takes over when they inflict. Before Sophie's inflicting was reset it was more of a negative experience; now it's changed, but we don't know the extent of it as she's only used it once since.
The emphasis on monsters from both fits perfectly with how Sophie perceived her ability, especially at first. She didn't want to be able to hurt people, didn't like that inflicting pain on others was something written into her DNA and what that could say about her. She was horrified to find out what she could do, and it's entirely possible that without the necessity of it in her situation she never would've trained it. At least not with the expedience she did
A few other lines I think are worth mentioning rapid fire: "I keep it caged but I can't control it," "Can anybody save me from myself?" and "I hate what I've become, the nightmare's just begun." They've got a certain perspective I think is applicable :)
