Here is my first Character mashup piece. This is a mashup of Gumball from the Amazing world of Gumball and Night in the Woods. The goal of this mashup was taking an expressive character like Gumball and trying to emulate that expressiveness in a simpler style. The style in gumball is expressive, colourful and also utilises multiple different artstyles based on the joke/parody or character. The world around them is rendered realistically as a juxtaposition for their cartoony actions.
Meanwhile the artstyle for Night in the Woods is more mature and autumn themed with falling leaves and a strong emphasis on warm orange, browns and reds. The characters are made of simple shapes with most of their expression coming from their dialogue, the shape of their eyes and minor mouth movements.
I based the design for Gumball on Mae, the main character of Night in the Woods (seen above) I kept the recognisable headshape, whiskers, ears and colours whilst adding elements from NITW to the design such as the eyes not being pure white and the character having no tail, these elements were not important to Gumball’s character and he is recognisable despite them.
