Ooh, thank you @aviss! This is for the Wip sampler basket thing.
So this is a fic that Iāve been sorta drafting with @tall-wolf-of-tarth that is based on the TV Show Time Team. We havenāt got anything written outside a rough sketch, but the basic plan is that Brienne is an archaeologist on the show and Jaime is a famous actor the producers bring in as the presenter because of flagging ratings. The show becomes a hit because viewers cannot get enough of the obvious sexual tension between Jaime and Brienne, even though they seem to hate each other!
I would really like to write it at some point, lets just hope the stars align!
Oohhh, the Yawning grave for the Wip sampler, please :)
I keep thinking Iām going to write this more as a horror fic and post it for Halloween but then I look at what date it is and laugh quietly to myself. So weāll see. May get some late November unsettling fic instead. š
Brienne pulls on sneakers and ties her hair in a tight ponytail and runs for hours. She tries not to think of the streets under her feet turning gray with ash or the buildings at her side exploding with great gouts of poisonous green fire.

Oh if you take prompts for the arranged marriage, number 7 please :)
Thank you for prompting!! I briefly lost lost courage for this, but then I doubled down, so here you go. Also written when Iām half sick and very tired, so quality is questionable, but!
Also I know it technically says Regency AU but I donāt know enough about Regency time period to make it so, so just have something vaguely like the second part of the prompt! IDK what AU this is, just. Something. Enjoy? Hopefully?
Regency AU - Either Person A or Person B is in danger of being ruined socially

āMarry me.ā
This is not how Jaime had imagined the words being spoken between the two of them. (And he had, now and then, if only to attempt picturing a softer rejection than the ones his sister had given him, because Brienne would be honest, but not cruel.)
Her gaze, that had been skidding around their campsite minutes ago, is now resolutely on him, though small part of this proposalās cost is reflected in her reddened face. The way her throat struggles over a swallow in the stretching silence.
Jaime knows he should answer, before she takes it as a no, but he is captivated by how stalwart and vibrant she looks in this light, this moment. (When she had asked him to marry her.) Brilliant, with her blush and the shine of guiding stars born in her eyes, and all the more with her heart.
āWhy?ā he has to ask, because he knows sheād not ask this merely because she wants to. As much as Jaime wishes it to be the case.
āSo you can claim having married me months ago, at the start of this journey or even before. Who will care at our destination for what you supposedly did or did not do with Cersei when you were teenager, when you have had a wife for a year already? At least your father should not care too much it is Brienne the Beauty. I am to be Evenstar, after all.ā Thereās just an echo of what he imagines ice sounds like breaking in the distance on Beauty and he swears heāll revisit it on later time (when he can hopefully marvel at all of her and tell her just that), but first he has to clarify something.
āAre you telling me, you will cloak me and bring me under your protection from dishonor?ā Him, the handless oathbreaker whose honor was washed away by the blood of his king and sisterās maidenhead? Sheād put herself on line in even this way to protect him?
āYes, Jaime. And when you meet someone who you truly wish to wed, we can annul the marriage on grounds of it never being consummated. No one will blame you for that.ā Her face twists at that, possibly thinking back to her failed engagements or of the further embarrassment sheād willingly bring to herself (the speculations she threatened him into this, somehow, or whatever foul thing small minds would conjure).
His heart is so full it leaks molten gold into his limbs, part fury at all those who have hurt her so (it scorches his tongue that had been cruel to her, too, once upon a time), part awe and disbelieving gratitude. And part, the largest of all, such overwhelming love it blurs the edges of his vision with golden smoke.
āOh, Brienne. If we are to marry, unconsummated is the last thing our marriage will be.ā
Jaime hauls himself closer to her then, arm wrapping around her shoulders. In the flickering light of fire, her eyes are both darker and bluer than anything he has seen and he thinks it might be the most beautiful of their shades yet. (But he looks forward to possibilities of finding other favorites.) Brienneās gaze wavers again, slipping from his eyes to his lips one word away from hers, and back up once more.
āIf you will have me.ā
She kisses him in lieu of answer.
Much later, he tells her it seems he must now rescue her honor with marriage and receives a well earned gentle smack on chest. āWe save each other, then,ā he offers, because that is the truth, and in response, Brienneās smile outshines all the light he has ever known.
For Waiting to be consumed by you, 5, 9 and 11 please :)
5: What part was hardest to write?
Iām not going to say the entire thing, though thatās my initial instinct. The hardest thing was figuring out how much to write before he turns her and how much time/content needed to happen before Kingās Landing. It also wasnāt easy to navigate a dynamic where sex is so prominent before time for feelings to develop. I didnāt give them the benefit of Jaimeās hand loss, because Brienne assumed that role. She lost what was, at the time, most important to her: her humanity. Basically, itās difficult to navigate a fic that follows the canon timeline for a while and then has to shift drastically. And donāt even get me started on how many changes I made to the initial outline.
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
Oh, nevermind, I have to get started on that. So, there were several things I played with:Ā
1) An entire alternate universe where everyone is a different sort of mythical creature. The Starks were going to be werewolves, the Lannisters vampires, the Tyrells elves or Fae folk of some sort, etc. etc. But I realized if I went down that path...well, I didnāt want to rewrite everything because Iām a lazy writer, I guess.Ā
2) There was a version where Cersei and Tywin were ALSO vampires and Cersei was a lot more pissed that Jaime turned someone when their vampire incest love was extra special;Ā
3) There was a version where Brienne had to kill Cersei to save Sansa;Ā
4) There was a version where Jaime valonqared Cersei to save Brienne.Ā
...I think those are the main ones. Those likely would've been BETTER fics. AH WELL.Ā
11: What do you like best about this fic?
I like that I did make it a little bit dark and morally questionable early on. It did get soft earlier than I thought it would. Iām also pretty chuffed with my usage and twists on the book canon scenes. The sex is pretty good. And I reeeeeally like the scene between Cersei and Brienne. Thatās some of my better writing overall.Ā
Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great one! Ummm, Jaime/Brienne and masquerade for the prompt :)
Thank you! And here goes:Brienne forces a smile onto her face as her father presents the idea of a masquerade ball. He enthuses over the idea of it being something different, exclaiming how Septa Roelle had suggested it and wouldnāt it make people excited to come to Tarth?
Brienne tells herself that heās being sincere, that her father is loving but clueless and has no idea that Septa Roelle had tartly told Brienne sheād be better off wearing a mask until a potential suitor could at least tolerate her enough not to run away.Ā Ā
Three broken betrothals already and Brienne knows her father is desperate to find a husband for her, to carry on the family line and continue to govern Tarth.Ā Itās her duty to marry, to have children, and Brienne has seen the weary and despairing look on her fatherās face as her marriage prospects have shattered like Humphrey Wagstaffās collarbone.Ā
So she lets the seamstress fit her for a dress, rose and blue for the colors of Tarth, and place an elaborate mas on her face. The mask does hide things. It hides her broken nose, her freckles, her strangely out of sync features. But it canāt hide how tall Brienne is, and at five and ten she isnāt even done growing, and it canāt hide that Brienne is broad and muscular, with no breasts or hips or pleasing curves.Ā
The great hall at Evenfall is transformed, glittering with candles that reflect on the white marble that is Tarthās pride. Brienne knows that her father has successfully invited lords from all over Westeros, some of them far above the rank they should be able to attract. Mostly thanks to pirate skirmishes along other parts of the coast that have put Tarthās rocky harbors and seasoned soldiers in exceptionally high demand. An arrangement with the Evenstarās daughter, no matter how ugly she is, is suddenly far more appealing than it might otherwise be. Guests have come from as far away as Winterfell and the Westerlands.Ā
Brienne lurks along the edges of the hall, trying to make herself as small as possible. Sheās already caught laughter from guests ā even with a mask, itās obvious who she is, her height and her build giving it away, and the comment about a sow in silk sting more than sheād like. One man, who Brienne thinks might have been a Manderly, had come close as if to ask her to dance, and then shaken his head and backed away, gloomily telling an older man he couldnāt bring himself to do it.Ā
Itās still better than the last ball, because Brienne has danced, at least, a little bit. A man somewhat shorter than her with red hair, and another man even smaller than that, with a head of dark curls. Brienne had heard the laughs, but both men had been kind and polite, at least. It doesnāt take away the sting of watching other, prettier girls sweep around the room in dresses that suit them, being easily twirled and spun by partners who tower over them.Ā
āDoes the wall need you to hold it up, or are you free to dance?ā
Brienneās head jerks up at the voice, low and smooth in a way that makes her stomach lurch uncomfortably. She stammers out a question, looking around to be sure heās talking to her.Ā
āYes, of course Iām talking to you.ā The man is taller than Brienne, though not by much, with a shock of golden hair that matches his gold mask perfectly.Ā Everything about him is gold, actually, from the sun-kissed tan of his skin to the richly embroidered doublet and breeches.Ā āYouāve been standing here for so long I thought perhaps the building required your assistance.ā
The mocking tone in his voice makes Brienne flush, thankfully hidden by the mask, but the man still stands there holding his hand out. Brienne can see her father staring from across the hall, a hopeful look on his face, and she sighs.Ā
The man is, at least, a competent dancer. Brienne can hear the whispers as they move around the floor, and something nags at the back of her brain, that she should know who this man is, that it matters somehow. But she canāt think about it, not when sheās trying to remember the steps and not think about the warm press of his hand on her back or the strange sensation where their hands are clasped, like fire is zinging along her skin.Ā
The man does not get any kinder, however, making a series of mocking jabs at Brienneās dress, her lack of socializing, her hesitant dancing.Ā
āIf you donāt dance, you donāt talk to people, my lady, what do you do?ā he asks, and Brienne can tell heās smug, even though she canāt see his face.Ā
āKnock men like you into the dust,ā Brienne retorts, before she can regain her manners.Ā
The man throws his head back, laughing loudly enough to draw the attention of even more people.Ā Ā
āThere are no men like me,ā he says.Ā āOnly me. And you couldnāt beat me.ā
āCouldnāt I?ā Brienne is too angry to care that sheās making a spectacle of herself ā again ā failing to behave as a lady should.Ā
āYouāre strong, Iāll give you that,ā he says.Ā āBut you donāt have the skill.ā
Brienne steps back as the music ends.Ā āWhy donāt we go to the training yard and find out?āĀ
The grin that spreads across the manās face is dangerous enough that Brienne wonders if sheās made a mistake.
