I feel like, in addition the the idea of a visually contrasted relationship (re: the energy of butch/femme, though not entirely), there is also an element to that with ages. How Eve is is younger by a degree, and how even if it they are not too far apart by years, there could also be the fear that if not seen as a strictly romantic relationship, it could be seen as an in-equal relationship through age, normative standards, or town reputability.
