Fake not-dating. Like, listen to me. Zelda and Marie are dating in secret, like in the beginnings of it. That makes it tentative, and there's some starting and stopping when it comes to their feelings. But it's hot and heavy too, like they have an impossible time keeping their hands and their mouths to themselves in all the most inappropriate places.
Nonetheless, it's a secret.
There is, hence, overcompensating in public. Distance, and being formal with one another, and sometimes getting into disagreements on purpose.
This all has their children stressed, like losing their minds stressed trying to smooth things over for them, and make them get their act together, and push them over the line into an official romance. Because it's obvious, like so obvious they are right for each other.
Between Prudence, and Sabrina, and Ambrose, it's all:
"Something's happened, and you two need to find out what, and I mean now, before it goes on too long. I'm serious. Then tell your Aunt Zelda to make it up to Marie, because she's talking about making a trip back home. She's never coming back if she leaves here."
"Excuse me, hang on? Who says it isn't Marie's fault this time. It can't be Aunt Zee's fault like every time."
"To be fair, I don't think Aunt Zee even knows that Marie is into her. I swear, she thinks she's over-attentive like that to everyone. But, hear me out. If you could convince Marie to do something special? Then maybe Aunt Zee would clue in."
"Please. Like your Aunt Zelda isn't the one making goo-goo eyes at her all the time. I've seen her drooling over her. If she has feelings for Marie, then she needs to commit and make the first move."
"No way. That's not right. If like you're saying, Aunt Zee is doing all the flirting, then it's Marie that needs to reciprocate first. I mean, how is Aunt Zee supposed to go for it if she has nothing to go on, huh?"
Like three of the worst parent-trappers from hell, misunderstanding what's happening and getting it wrong on all possible counts, all summer long, while the two adults are sucking each other's face off like teenagers in a different room.
