“Who the fuck do you think you are?!” The words exploded from Sade’s mouth and before he knew what he was doing, his hands were at Avenier’s back, and he pushed with all his might. Every muscle in his body strained with the force, muscles he didn’t even know he had, and he thrust it all forth—every late night left wondering, every missed phone call, every goddamn empty pill bottle he found on the floor.  Every bit of frustration and anger that had been tormenting for weeks and months had finally bubbled up and spilled over and found its way out.

               But he had every right to be. Avenier had promised him that this would stop. He had promised he would come home, promised he would stay sober and stay off the streets. But when he had come into the bar off his ass to the point where he needed to be thrown out, that had been more than enough. He had tried to look the other way. He had tried so hard to ignore all the signs. But he couldn’t do it anymore.

               Avenier stumbled hard and there were several heavy crashes in the dark. But Sade just slammed the door behind him. The rest of the apartment complex was going to hear him scream either way, but they didn’t need to show.

               “You fucking asshole! When are you going to quit lying to me, huh?! After everything I do for, after every fucking time I forgive you, you’re still gonna keep doing this shit?!”

               He didn’t get an answer and it only fueled him. His face was surely red, maybe redder than his hair and before he could stop himself, he kicked at Avenier’s foot.

               “You can’t even fucking answer me? God, can you even hear me? Or are you too fucking high?!” He paced away with his hands knotted in his hair and hot, angry tears streaming down his face. “What the fuck is wrong with you, Ave?! Why do you keep doing this?!”

               Nothing. God, he was probably just staring at him, giving him that stupid blank stare that he always got when he didn’t understand anything past the haze.

               “What is it that I’m not doing for you, huh? What, is free rent not good enough for you? Is being around for me boring for you? What the fuck is it?!” Sade spun back towards him, chest heaving and waited. For something, anything. But he only got silence. “GODDAMN IT, IF YOU DON’T ANSWER ME!”

               He jammed his hand against the switch to flood the living room with light. He expected to see Avenier sitting on the floor, staring up at him with those big brown eyes, confusion and drugs misting over the pain that he knew his lover was in. There was something broken in him, and Sade could see it every time he looked at him, and it just killed him that he didn’t know how to fix it. He expected to meet those big dumb eyes and to feel bad that he had pushed him down when he was too fucked up to defend himself.

               But all he saw instead was red. Red on the edge of their now broken end table. Red on Avenier’s face, streaming from the gash on the side of his head. Red on the floor. Red.

               “…Ave…?” Sickness twisted in his guts and he clutched at once at his stomach. “…A-Avenier…?”

               He still wouldn’t speak to him. Sade covered his mouth and took a clumsy step forward, then another, and his knees gave out under him.                “I didn’t mean—O-oh my God… Avenier…?” He hesitated but reached to shake him. “Ave, please… I’m s-so sorry… Sh-shit…!”

               His hands were numb as he went for his phone, and it took three tries to dial the right number with how badly his hands shook.

               “911, what’s your emergency?”
