December 3rd began with a phone call. It was early in the morning, by Esther’s standards anyway, but the phone wouldn’t stop ringing, so in the end she had to force herself out of bed to answer it.

“’Lo?” she asked, wrapping a thick cardigan around her.

“Miss Williams?”

“Um, yeah?” she replied in confusion. No one formal ever rang her, except when she hadn’t handed an essay in, and she would swear on her mother’s life that she’d handed the most recent one in last week.

“Were you recently at Waterstones for a job interview?”

“Oh, my god!” she exclaimed, shaking herself awake. “Yes! I’m sorry, I didn’t realise it would be you.”

“No matter,” the voice on the other end of the phone said dismissively, although kindly. “I’m ringing to inform you that the job is yours.”

“Seriously?!”

“Seriously,” the voice confirmed.

“Great! Thank you! When shall I start?”

“How does today sound?”

“Today sounds great! What time?”

“Is one o’clock ok? We can work out further shifts when you arrive.”

“One o’clock is perfect,” she beamed. “Thank you!”

“You’re very welcome, Miss Williams. See you later.”

The speaker hung up, and Esther was left, grinning to herself silently as she filled the kettle.
