Honestly, I'd believe Lieutenant Jee turning a leaf to be on the side of the Avatar and allies more than I would Mister General, Dragon of The West, His Royal Tea-Loving Kookiness Iroh.
Iroh laughed about burning a kingdom to the ground.
And Jee was a mere lieutenant.
Correct me if I'm wrong, of course, but as far as I am aware:
They're junior or commisioned officers who work in law enforcement and serve a critical link between senior command and frontline personnel.
Their jobs are usually managing soldier welfare, training, and mission execution while translating strategic orders into actionable tasks.
Yes, he too was in the wrong, but I'm far more inclined to believe a Jee redemption (should we have gotten it) than I'd ever be in regards to Iroh.
A lieutenant is more likely to turn because he is closer to the blood. Iroh's too far up in the "tea and proverbs" cloud to feel the immediate grit of the war until it’s too late. Jee felt it every day.
So anywho, Surrogate Dad Jee rewrite idea here.
