CooperVision is expanding its worldwide recall of the Avaira brand product line of contact lenses to include 6.6 million additional lenses due to the presence of silicone oil residue.

CooperVision is expanding its August contact lens recall to include 4.9 million additional Avaira Sphere lenses that could have silicone oil residue on them, reports MSNBC.   After a number of reports of discomfort, pain and injuries including a torn cornea, CooperVision, of Cooper Companies, Inc., recalled some types of Avaira soft lenses in August. This recall expands upon that.   Some critics said the recall was not announced widely enough and left consumers at risk. A list of complaints can be found at eFood Alerts, a blog run by Phyllis Entis.     Entis reports that as of late October, the FDA received 40 adverse event reports for Avaira lenses. CooperVision did not return phone calls or emails by the time of publication. For those experiencing symptoms, CooperVision recommends immediately removing the lenses and checking on their website to see if theirs are affected by the recall. They said in a statement that if contact lenses are removed upon initial discomfort, symptoms should clear up in 15 - 30 minutes.   Users affected by the recall in countries outside the U.S. including Canada, China, Spain, Italy and others should visit this website. CooperVision also said that they will not take any Avaira Toric orders at the current time and that the lenses should again be available in the “second quarter of 2012.” The availability of the Avaira Sphere lenses shouldn’t be affected, said the website.
