AU where Steve somehow ends up in Billy's room and stays with him until he falls asleep.Â
Billy's bed doesn't have much room for two bodies, but Steve solves that by clinging to Billy like a koala, careful to make sure he doesn't press on any of his bruises.
"Why?" Billy hiccups, trying to hold in his tears for a little longer. He doesnât want Steve to see him like this. Pathetic. Weak. In other words, the real Billy Hargrove. Now King Steveâs going to tell the whole school what he saw, and everyone will know that heâs a crybaby.Â
âWhy am I here? Or why am I in your bed hugging you?â
âBoth.â
âSomething told me you shouldnât be alone tonight.â
Fine. If he won't mention It, that's just fine by me.
âIâm always alone.â Heâs not exactly fit to lie at the moment. Besides, it was a mutual understanding when they started seeing each other that they'd try being honest. Plus, Steve could see through even his best lies anyway.
His impromptu guest inhales sharply before gently kissing the spot where heâd collided with the shelf. The dam holding back his river of tears breaks, and he tries to hide his face from Steve to try and preserve some dignity. Neilâs already called him a pussy for crying like a little bitch.
Steve wasnât heartless, but he was about as emotionally available as a tree stump, or so Billy had heard through the grapevine. According to Tommy, Steve hadnât cried since he was eleven when his grandmother died, and he âdismissed the feelings of those closest to him until they couldnât take it anymoreâ.
For all of Tommyâs literal shortcomings, heâs known Steve a lot longer than Billy has.
âI donât like this.â
Billy shoves down the temptation to shove Steve out of his bed. You wonât. You couldnât even push your old man.
âI mean... I hate when youâre hurting. When youâre sad. I donât know what to say to make this better. I open my mouth and I... I hurt people.â
Against his better judgment, Billy turns over to stare at Steve, who may look increasingly uncomfortable at all the emotion on display but hasnât shown any signs of pulling away yet.
On nights like these, Billy usually holds his own hand for comfort. As heâs about to complete his sad little ritual, Steve taps Billyâs palm twice, and then with unexpected tenderness, holds his hand, conveying more than words ever could.
In the morning, the only proof that last night really happened is Billy's hand molded to fit the shape of a bigger one.

âShh, shhh, itâs okay, Serif, itâs okay. Iâm here. Youâre okay,â the skeleton replied gently, holding the other close to him, trying to calm him down.
When he came in here to check up on Serif, he hadnât expected to see the signs of a nightmare from him, but he was immediately at his side, trying to calm him down. After all, it wasnât like he didnât know what these things could be like, what they could do to you. And so heâd gathered him up and started stroking his head, whispering comforting things to him.
Now that the other seemed to be at least slightly present, he shifted so that his hands were on either side of his face and looked at him intently. âSerif. Listen. Can you breathe with me? Just try to focus on my breathing and following it.â He started taking slow breaths, intended for calming down. Heâd found that it was a good way to calm down, but it was a hard thing to do at the edge of a panic attack unless someone else was there doing it for you and you could follow them. The point was to get his mind off the nightmare and focus solely on the breathing. Not to mention breathing in general was good for calming the body down.
