my favorite book on ancient magic is fritz graf’s magic in the ancient world. magika hiera: ancient greek magic and religion, edited by faraone and obbink, is also good, as is the sourcebook by ogden mentioned above. in terms of primary sources, reading through the greek magical papyri (where i found that skull spell) is fascinating.Â
as a general content warning to anyone interested in ancient spells, there is a lot of violent and coercive imagery in them (especially in erotic curses).
