In S2E12 Unnatural Habits, Phryne tried to convince Aunt P to take the “fallen and friendless” pregnant girl Mary in by telling her “You love a challenge, Aunt Prudence. Your very own Pygmalion”. Aunt P was resistant to the idea at first, stating that she had done enough for charity, but at the end she ended up delivering Mary’s baby and giving her a placement as the cook’s assistant. It’s a shame that we never found out what became of the spunky Mary. Did she stay with Aunt P long? Did she find a good chap and get married? I read one fanfic before that paired her with Bert, which was a rather nice coupling in my opinion.

Anyhow, let’s talk about the Pygmalion reference. According to Wikipedia, in ancient Greek mythology, “Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life.” George Bernard Shaw later wrote a play that was named after the figure and was first presented on stage to the public in 1913. His play was later adapted numerous times, most notably the musical “My Fair Lady” and its film version. (Links to Wikipedia here and here)

Although I have seen both the musical play and film of “My Fair Lady”, I never read the play, so I am putting it on my reading list. There are several Kindle editions on Amazon, and I chose this one with illustrations and a biography of Bernard Shaw. (Link here)

While researching the play, I found a book called “Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths” (1984, by Bernard Evslin). According to Amazon, it is “written in simple, direct language” and “an accessible and entertaining guide to the Greek myths and their players”. I am putting it on my reading list too. (Link here)
