I would not call myself a stars wars fan, but it can’t be ignored when it comes to sound and sound effects. The story of star wars is one of fiction and so the sounds of storm troopers, scout ships and the millennium falcon, chewbaacca the wookie, yoda and droids are of course integral to the story. Â
Moreover, the sounds airlock doors and elevators, the dull hum of the death star, hydraulic machinery and the vacuum of space are small but important sounds contrast by important scene effects such as light sabres and their timing to Darth Vader’s breathing pattern and voice box. Unfortunately, I think I detect the convention of a Wilhelm Scream when Luke has his hand cut off, I say unfortunately because now I know what it is I will be listening.
This movie comes to life because of its sound effects, they are essential to the story and when you add the sound track that supports each scene it takes you on an emotional journey, that of Luke’s quest. From the slight sounds of flute to full orchestral moments and even those of silence are integral to the star wars franchise and a huge part of it success.

This scene from Apocalypse Now is rooted in the sound track Ride of the Valkyries, from the distant sound effect of approaching choppers and their heavy rotor blades to the scrambling of Vietcong on wooden bridges and the taking of weapons.Â
Emotionally you are drawn into the scene of impending mayhem as the da dada da da, da dada da da, dada da da, da dada makes you realise how important timing is as the first rocket launch by the aerial cavalry is timed as the volume increases to accentuate the action and carnage as machine gun fire, explosions and radio communications are juxtaposed to the soundtrack. On reflection
From the music score to the sfx this scene works in its ability to make you feel part of the action and somewhat part of the shame because it has strange resignation about it, that killing people is just part of the game and okay.
