April 17th is...

Auctioneers Day - It’s a time to remember that auctioneering is one of the world’s most ancient professions, having begun more than 2,000 years ago. In fact, the very first auction was held about 500 B.C. in Babylon.

Bat Appreciation Day - On this day  we are reminded of the important role that bats play in our day-to-day lives.  Did you know that bats can eat as many as 1,000 mosquitoes in an hour?  Did you also know that bats are pollinators? This means that, along with the likes of butterflies and bees, they provide a critical link in our supply of food.

Cheeseball Day - The first cheese ball appeared at, perhaps one of the most unexpected of places, the White House. In the early 1800s, there was a farmer by the name of Elisha Brown, Jr. who was seeking to present an unusual gift to then President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. So it was this desire that allowed an unbelievably massive ball of cheese to wind up on the White House lawn. How massive? 1,235 pounds to be exact!

Ford Mustang Day -  The Ford Mustang was first introduced to the world in April of 1964. The World’s Fair was in full swing, and this car was Ford’s introduction as the car of the future. This introduction of the Mustang also was the introduction of the first Pony Car, to wit, a line of small sporty cars with sleek lines and an affordable price-tag. Sales of the Mustang proved that this car was going to become an American favorite, with well over 400,000 sales in the first year it was in production.

Haiku Poetry Day -  Serves as a reminder that there is so much more to this style of poetry than a misspent week in high school literature classes. Instead, it’s a day to celebrate the width and depth and breadth that can be enjoyed when words are limited but imaginations are allowed to soar.

Kickball Day -  Kickball is a popular playground sport that has been around since the early 1900’s. Originally called “Kick Baseball” the game was used by physical education teachers to teach school children the basics of baseball.
