Jess rolled her eyes and mouthed along with the caretaker as she ranted about how 'they weren't grateful enough' and how she had 'offered them a home when no one else would in this town' It was something she said every time any of them got even in the smallest bit of trouble. Jess has heard it a million times and was just trying to make the younger kids laugh as she continued mocking her behind her back.Ā
Ā "And if I ever see you doing that again, I'll toss you out I swear!" The carer said and Jess quickly shut her mouth, looking a innocent as possible as the kids laughed next to her when the woman turned around "Jessica what am I going to do with you?"Ā
"I'm not sure Mrs Darl, I'm not sure" Jess said since it was the response expected of her. Mrs Darl just sighed and shook her hand walking away and Jess grinned before ushering the younger kids back to their part of the house.
Mrs Darl was doing them all the a favour but it just grinded Jessās gears how she used it to try to guilt trip them into being good, sometimes Mrs Darl even ranted about if theyād just been normal children then this whole thing could have been avoided. As if it was their fault they all had various different powers.Jess often argued with her that adults had powers too and just because they didnāt know how to control their more unique powers sometimes didnāt mean they werenātĀ ānormalā children. More often the not Jess got placed on kitchen duty for her troubles.Ā
There were kids like them that got what they calledĀ āadult powersā when they were young, it happened quite frequently now-a-days but people just didnāt do anything about it. When you were a child you either developed aĀ āsoftā power like the ability to talk to animals or something along those lines or you didnāt and you got your more dangerous power when you were an adult.Ā It had started happened to children around the early 1900s, them getting their adult powers early. Sometimes parents fought to keep them, other times they were shoved at the houses who handled kids like them and only welcomed back when they were older.
Jess waved bye to the young kids and they all ran into the backward before sighing and heading up to the attic, the space the older kids and teens had claimed as their spot. Closing the door behind her, she walked up the stairs and nodded to a few people before flopping down onto the couch, sighing
āI swear that woman recites those lectures in the mirror every morningā she groaned out
