I know most artists don't usually make long posts like this, but I feel much more comfortable being direct and transparent with you to avoid any misunderstandings.
*Ever since I was little, drawing—specifically making comics—has been my main way of expressing myself. It has always been my passion. As I grew up, I discovered other formats like manga, manhwa, donghua, and webtoons. Joining the fan community showed me that fans could actually make their own comics too, which immediately caught my attention. I wanted to make my own.
At one point, I tried publishing on Webtoon and it did pretty well despite my lack of digital experience. However, my content was too heavy for their guidelines and several chapters got removed... I still hold that project close to my heart and hope to bring it back someday.*
Now that you have some context about my passion, here's the situation: What if I had the chance to publish a physical Doujinshi?
I previously mentioned vaguely that I wanted to make a fanzine, but I meant something printed at home using content I’ve already drawn, as a free gift with letter orders. But now I’m talking about high-quality, professionally printed books manufactured by a company. ACGgoods finally launched their custom comic book option!
Just thinking about fulfilling my dream of holding my own physical book got me super excited, though the product launched way sooner than I expected. I was already working on some personal Xiaolin Showdown mini-comics (the kind I feel like I never finish because I didn't have a solid goal), but now I can build a structured short story.
Here’s the catch: launching a petition for physical printing requires project backing through pledges on the website. But honestly, whether we reach the goal or not, I still want to make this project happen. As you know, even though I sell merch in my shop, my love for Xiaolin Showdown is REAL. I'm genuinely thrilled about the idea of owning a physical comic of my favorite ship.
Still, as enthusiastic as I get with new projects, I want to keep my feet on the ground. I'm taking this very seriously because it means a lot to me, and I want to deliver something truly worth it. I don't want to build hype I can't fulfill, which is why I'm making this post.
Drawing-wise, I'm working on it. Story-wise, I tend to stick to shorter concepts because I get bored easily if I drag things out. And when it comes to scripts and dialogue... it might not always show because autocorrect is my friend, but I have dyslexia. You might notice it most when I draw letters backwards in my artwork (and no, I don't draw Ken's 'E' backwards just to be cute, haha!).
So writing takes a lot of effort for me. In fact, I always have someone proofread my posts and comics before publishing. This slows down my process because I need to write scripts, check dialogues, and my goal is to release it in multiple languages (Spanish, English, and Russian).
I don't want to bite off more than I can chew, so I'm starting with the minimum format of 12 pages. I spent all day between commissions trying to come up with a simple plot that I’d love as a fan, and hopefully you will too.
Over the next few days, I’ll be posting sketches. I want to take things step-by-step, even with the funding campaign deadline ticking. I know I could just show up one day with a finished physical comic and scream, "DRAGONS, MY FIRST CHACK DOUJIN IS UP ON THE STORE!", but it’s more complex than that. If you're a comic creator, you know how meaningful it is to share the behind-the-scenes process so people can appreciate the effort and feel part of the journey.
It's funny because usually, you finish a comic first and then look for printing options. Here it's the other way around, but it gives me the push I needed to finally make my own. I’ve always wanted to make a Chase x Jack doujinshi, and while this one will be SFW / for all ages (due to platform rules), I still hope to make all kinds of content in the future.
