When the official announcement comes out, Miya Atsumuâs name is above Oikawa Tooruâs. It is not yet decided who the starting setter will be, and the PR team made the decision to go with alphabetic order.
Tooru is so pissed that when Atsumu knocks on his hotel room door at 11 that night for their rendezvous, he pretends not to be in.
âI know youâre there, Tooru,â hisses Atsumu, pissed himself. Itâs just a stupid press release, for Christâs sake! (Not that Atsumu necessarily minds that his name is printed first, clearly above TooruâsâŠ).
He angrily rattles the handle, knocks, rattles the handle again. Heâd probably keep going all night, but an old lady pokes her head out of the door across the hall and gives him the evil eye.
Atsumu slouches off, upset. Itâs been a while, and while he would never say it in so many words, heâs been missing Tooru. They get to see one another so infrequently these days.  And why should that bastard get away with being a giant baby?
Which is why, ten minutes later, Atsumu finds himself walking around to the back of the hotel and then shimmying up the fire escape. He barely escapes a fall to his death as he leaps onto Tooruâs small balcony. After that, itâs a quick step in through the sliding glass door, which, in a stroke of luck, is unlocked.
Tooru stares at him like heâs a ghost. âWhat the hell?â
âI knew you were here!â Atsumu pants triumphantly.
âWhich means you should have taken the hint,â responds Tooru coldly.
âitâs just a stupid announcement,â says Atsumu. âEveryone knows the starter position is still up in the air.â The starter position Iâm going to get, he adds, but only in his head.
Tooruâs eyes narrow.  âThatâs what you think,â is his reply, as though Atsumu has spoken the words aloud.
Oh. Yeah. Atsumu had forgotten about Tooruâs mindreading capabilities.
âAnyway, Iâm not in the mood,â adds Tooru, turning away.
       âArgh! Youâre such a freaking baby!â Â
Atsumu is annoyed beyond measure by this asshole and his prickly, egotistical personality. (And is Tooru really going to kick him out? After he climbed up the fire escape and everything, risking life and limb? Is he willing to so casually throw away one of the few, very precious moments theyâll have together at this event?). In a fit of anger, he grabs a pillow and hurls it at Tooru.
Tooru is taken completely off guard; itâs a direct hit to the back of his head. Â
He spins around, looking shocked and very, very angry. And then he snarls and grabs the pillow off the floor.
Atsumu puts up a hand to shield himself, but instead of throwing the pillow, Tooru takes a flying leap, tackling Atsumu to the bed and knocking the wind right out of him.
Tooru shows no mercy, sitting on top of Atsumu and hitting him over and over again with the pillow.
He only stops to declare, âYouâre the biggest baby here!â
âAm not!â Atsumu gasps, trying desperately to catch his breath under the onslaught. He struggles to rise, but Tooru pulls his wrists out from under him and pins him to the bed.
âAre too,â says Tooru, also winded.  âAdmit it.â
       âAdmit what?â
âThat youâre the biggest baby.â Tooruâs eyes are boring into his, and his hands are digging into Atsumu.
       âWhat?! Yer kiddinâ, right?â
âAdmit it!â Tooru repeats, more fiercely. He plainly means it, and Atsumu can tell heâs not going to stop until he either gets what he wants, or Atsumu, in turn, vanquishes him.
Atsumu takes a moment to consider his options. He could continue this fight; he might be able to switch their positions and force Tooru to eat his words. But itâs also possible he wonât succeed. The two of them have always been very evenly matched.
Alternatively, he could⊠take the high road here, and not only end up being the bigger man, but also hopefully have a very pleasant interlude with the guy whoâs come to mean a lot more to him than heâs been willing to admit.
So much more that, for perhaps the first time in his life, Atsumu is willing to consider surrender.
The tension leaks out of his body.
       âFine,â he says.
âFine?â Tooru parrots back at him, confused.
âYeah. Fine. Iâm the bigger baby.â
       Tooruâs eyes widen briefly.
When Atsumu doesnât grin and take it back, he drops his face, very slowly, until it is hovering right over Atsumuâs.
âIâm glad youâve seen the light,â he murmurs as he presses his lips to Atsumuâs. Â
Atsumu expects the kiss to be a victory kiss, full of gloating triumph, but itâs not. Itâs a soft, gentle kiss, gentler than any Tooru has ever given him before.
Atsumuâs hand wraps around Tooruâs neck, his other arm around Tooruâs back, tugging him in as close as possible.
 --------------------------------------------
âI canât believe you admitted that,â says Tooru afterwards, running a lazy hand up Atsumuâs side. Â
âBelieve it or not, beinâ with you is more important ta me than winninâ some stupid pissing contest.â
Tooru stiffens ever so slightly, his hand tightening around Atsumuâs waist.
âAnd you to me,â he eventually murmurs into Atsumuâs ear. Then, louder, âBut donât let it go to your head!â
Atsumu grins up at the ceiling.  All and all, tonight was nothing if not a raging success: Tooru likes him â really likes him, and heâs got him locked at his side until morning; he successfully pulled off a freaking James Bond maneuver on the fire escape; he ended what promised to be a nasty fight with an unusual degree of maturity; and, when allâs said and done, thatâs his name printed first on the announcement.
