I have learnt that there is a stark number of people that have a visceral hatred for the Burtonverse AiW and I just - I don't get it??
I understand having issues with TTLG (I have a few with that one - like the visuals and acting are 100% but the story could have been handled a little better imo). But the original live-action AiW?
And maybe it's just because of hyperfixation but like, I have never - in the 14 years it's existed - found a fault with it.
Most people I see complaining about how it's not a direct copy of the books and it's too dark and dreary for Wonderland - but I absolutely *love* that contradiction.
Even the most beautiful places are born from the darkest of situations. And it adds to the madness; trauma absolutely innhialates the brain, no wonder everyone's absolutely batshit insane.
But also like, for the whole "not a direct copy" argument; it's already been done by Disney. AiW was the first (iirc) animated to live action movie and I'm GLAD it was a sequel to the animated one! It adds far more depth to the story of AiW as a whole.
I see a lot of complaints about Tarrant too. Mainly about his backstory but like, why are y'all mad he gets characterised?? Why are y'all upset about him being made more human?
And this is coming from someone who has always had the Hatter as a favourite character. Like if there's anyone that deserves a traumatic backstory it's that guy!! And the way Johnny Depp brought Tarrant to life, gave him a name, explored his quirks, was beautiful!!
And if you're so desperate to see a direct copy sequel of AiW, look at the 1999 (I think) version of AiW (the one with the girl that plays Deb in Napolean Dynamite - her name has slipped me).
But like, yeah - I don't understand why people hate it so much. Everything about it in my opinion was done beautifully.
((Some people also talk about the hinted romance and that being creepy; though I think a lot of that comes with people assuming Tarrant is older than he is, and forgetting that Alice - by that point - is just shy of 20, and just shy of 23 by TTLG. Tarrant, for any reference, is about ~10ish years older than Alice give or take. Usually I assume it's about 14 years between the two. And yes it's a gap, but as two consenting adults it's fine? Coming from a near 21yr old btw just fyi)).
