You would stay up at night, thinking about what could've possibly happened to her. She would never tell you, she would just say it happens sometimes and for you to let it go but you couldn't anymore.

You didn't know what you'd do but you had to do something. So one day, you told her that she worried you, that her getting hurt shook you to your core. That she can't lie to you any more because you couldn't take it and it felt like every time she got hurt you got hurt to because you loved her so much.

She looked at you, her eyebrows furrowed and her lips shaking ever so slightly, before she nodded at you, and motioned you over to her bed. You sat down next to her, you hand grabbing hers, waiting for her to begin.

That's when she told you everything. What she does at night, how it hurts her, how she can barely trust or get close to anyone, afraid that they'll betray her. She told you about how her father hunts her with knowing it's her, how hearing him everyday curse Spider Woman out only secures the idea that she can never trust anyone for they'd see her a monster.

The entire time, your breathing was ragged, you pupils dilated and your lips quivering. You held her hand tighter, tears falling from your eyes as you listened to the love of your life tell you her darkest secrets. It hurt to know that she felt alone, that she couldn't trust anyone. When you know she can trust you, now you just needed to get her to believe that.

It was like being in love with a fictional character. Having never actually met them, you were able to create scenarios in your head of what your life might be like together, or how you would react to certain things, and that’s exactly what Miles did. He had never met you, but his mind would run wild with thoughts of you at night, wondering if there was a way for someone to have an interdimensional relationship with someone who already had a significant other. 

Speaking of your significant other, Gwen wasn’t stupid, she saw the way Miles would react when her phone would ding, or how he would scooch a little closer when she got a voice message from you. At first, she wasn’t gonna pretend like nothing was happening, cause all she wanted to do was shove him off a building and say hands off, but she was also, in a sort of sick way, interested to see how this would play out. 

Gwen was smart, artistic, and no stranger to experiments, so she saw this as a mild science project. She knew you’d never leave her, so watching someone fall head over heels for her lover was kind of interesting, again, in a sick way. But you can’t be bitten by a radioactive spider and not be a little mentally unstable. 

But Miles was her friend, and despite what she had promised herself, she got attached. She began to care for him, which is why it hurt more when she had to tell him to back off. This little experiment had gone on long enough and he needed to realize that it was never gonna happen. That you were hers and both of you were faithful to a fault. That was the last time they had seen each other. The argument wasn’t huge, it was very one-sided, Gwen was just pissed and hurt, and Miles was ashamed, so there were tears, promises, and broken hearts for all. But now she was on her way to his universe, and she was nervous as hell about it, because the last time she had seen him, she ripped his heart in two.

Gwen wasn’t surprised things had gone horribly. She was given specific orders NOT to go visit Miles. Her mission was to neutralize an anomaly, fix the timeline, and get right back out, all without being noticed. But she had done the exact opposite of that, and appeared above him in an interdimensional portal, asking if he could hang out. She knew it was wrong, and she knew that it was stupid, but she had always listened to her instincts, and they were telling her to go to him, to speak with him, to pick apart his mind and make sure he was ok. She felt horrible for how she had left things between the two, so she thought a quick check-in wouldn’t be too bad, even if he was a danger. 

But as she was told, everything went horribly wrong, and she was forced to travel to another universe to find the person she should’ve been chasing in the first place. But Miles never made it easy, so he followed, and here they were, chasing down a white and black-spotted guy, talking about how he was going to destroy everything Miles held dear. 

Gwen was no stranger to witty back-and-forth villain banter, she had been doing it for months, but something about how The Spot said these things shook her to her core. It wasn’t just empty threats spewed out in the midst of battle in hopes of intimidation. These were promises. Promises that currently he was carrying out expertly, and even four superheroes couldn’t stop him from what he had promised to do.
