In memoriam of Asunta Basterra
Spain is currently fixed on the trial of lawyer Rosario Porto and her ex husband, journalist Alfonso Basterra, both charged with the murder of their 12 year old adopted daughter Asunta. The details of the crime are heartbreaking and it definitely does not look good for the defendants.
The story goes like this. Around 10:30 pm of September 21st, 2013, Porto and Basterra called the police to report their daughter missing. Three hours later, two men walking down the road found the girl’s body. It was fairly close to the country house of the couple, who were separated at the time.
The autopsy revealed that Asunta, a chinese girl who had been adopted when she was a few months old, had been asphyxiated by something soft, like a pillow or a scarf. Further examination showed that prior to her murder she had been drugged with Orfidal, a tranquilizer, and the dosis was high enough to completely knock her out. Hair analysis indicated that she’d been taking the drug for at least three months.
This made sense to Asunta’s teachers, who had seen the girl looking dizzy and out of it every time she came from a visit to her father’s home. Asunta told them at the time that she didn’t know what they were giving her, that she was always sleepy, but the father explained that it was just medicine for her allergies.
According to Rosario’s psychiatrist, the woman had complained to him that her daughter “sucked her life out” and that she couldn’t stand her anymore. A friend of Asunta’s claimed that a few months before her death, the girl had told her they were trying to kill her, but she never elaborated.
So what clues led the police to the parents? Authorities knew someone had been at the country house, because the alarm was disconnected at 6:30 pm. Asunta’s death happened between 7 and 8 pm. Rosario first denied she’d been at the country house, then said she’d gone by herself to run some errands while Asunta stayed in the city. But a witness saw both of them in the car together, meaning the girl was at the house.
Police also found the same type of rope that was used to tie the girl in Rosario’s waste basket. They had been cut with the same knife. Rosario’s DNA was found under the armpits of Asunta, which they believe happened when she dragged the body to the road where it was found.
Alfonso’s computer and cell phone disappeared on the days after finding the body, and then mysteriously appeared again in the center table, where it could not have been missed in any search. There were traces that the hard drive had been wiped.
The working theory that the prosecution presented at the start of the trial is that Rosario and Alfonso had been planning their daughter’s murder for months, that he drugged her and she killed her. Both were caught having a suspicious conversation the day they were arrested in which she accused him of having a “feverish imagination that would cause them trouble” and asked him if he had time to get rid of the “thing.”
This is still in development. So far, the defendants claim innocence and they still need to present their case.
