he understood the sentiment all too-well. it was part of the training ---to sink into the abyss of nameless faces, to be only as memorable as the moment you came into contact with an individual ... a mark. connections came and went as fast as contracts with details remembered in his brain like computer storage: it could get him killed to forget the face of the onlooker in the market - the one who was too interested in his business. but to have his own face recalled?
it spelled danger. he was meant to be nothing, just a shadow, a whisper of a memory of someone you might have contacted once before. the details were to remain a blur, fuzzy, never quite fully grasped. conceptual and nothing more. her words rang a bell in him that charlie fully understood, and he nodded for the sentiment of it. it was a lonely life, but he surrounded himself with opulence when he could, to make up for the lake of human connection. and even then, if he could say he was attached? he wouldn’t know how.
